@futurebird ewwwwwAnthropology Degree here. My specialty was MesoAmerica (which was handy as it was a Special Interest to boot). In later classes we had to acquaint ourselves with the racist Ancient Aliens bullshit because the Prof was very clear that when people hear what you specialize in (unless they mistake you for a Paleontologist) they are gonna mention this shit.

@futurebird the correct response to that video is incoherent screaming, followed by telling everyone that the native americans around the great lakes were making tools out of hammered copper for a while once you've calmed down enough to stop screaming.

@futurebird now if the title had said the "*African* Great Lakes", I could totally believe trade goods would have travelled from the African Great Lakes to Ancient Egypt, but I'd expect the ancient egyptians had much closer sources of copper. After all, the White Nile connects to Lakes Kyoga, Victoria, and Albert. Sadly, that's probably not what the video is about.

@futurebird @wcbdata @michaelgemar "You know this rumour about the army of invisible vampire ghosts that's heading this way?' D. M. H. Dibhala's eyes swivelled nervously. But it was part of his stock in trade never to appear to be ignorant of anything except, perhaps, how to give correct change. 'Yes?' he said. 'The one about there being millions of them?' said Rincewind. 'And very hungry on account of not having eaten on the way? And made specially fierce by the Great Wizard?''Um . . . yes?''Well, it's not true.''It's not?''You don't believe me? @teledyn @gleick I think this one upset me because I hate it when people mess with Ancient Egyptian history. I love that stuff. It's so interesting and needs no embellishment. It's fun the way it is. But what I also hate is people ignoring the pre-history of the Americas. And this clown theory is somehow doing both at once. It's too much.

@futurebird @teledyn @gleick Especially when they make it more boring. And it’s not just ancient history. The extortion by water cartels in Bolivia was a fascinating piece of recent history. It was the basis for the film Quantum of Solace, which managed to make it both boring and stupid.

OK I just watched Milo's video about the "power plant under the pyramid" conspiracy theory (Some people did some ground penetrating radar and then some other people made up a bunch of fan fiction)And this explains why my recommendations, which are pure as the driven snow surfaced the nonsense about "Ancient Egyptians Were Mining Copper from the Great Lakes?"I didn't know about the whole pylons thing otherwise.
