@helenczerski I believe Trump and his sycophants, supports and cronies simply don't want to fund these things from tax dollars. They have a crude method of making their point but if someone step up to fund research or education or whatever, (OUTSIDE OF GOV), I don't think they will care.

@Doeshecook @helenczerski well for starters, the marketcap of bitcoin is only 1.6T$the US is in 36$T debt.for context the US is paying about 1T$ on interest on debtie the US could put 1.6T$ into bitcoin and it wouldn't substantially change its situation much.

@helenczerski I think everyone inside academia understands or might appreciate the immediate and very long-term consequences of.Since World War II, the United States has benefited by being a magnet for research talent.Thanks to immigration policies, an ideologically hostile environment that includes censorship and the direct assault on research, it’s been destroyed.The exodus has already started, and with it will go the generational transfer to education...

@helenczerski I have relatives who work there. My cousin's kid is a senior nurse - she's wondering if she's going to still be employed in 6 months. Her fiancé was due to be starting the residency portion of his training (they met at JH) but now can't find a placement.They were due to be planning their wedding right now. But now can't because of all the uncertainty. 2 lives put on hold.
