Hat in #Stuttgart (oder anderswo) jemand Erfahrung mit der Installation von Murena OS @e_mydata auf einem Android-Fairphone?Möchte gerne umsteigen und entgooglen.

@il_libraio /e/OS is an extraordinarily insecure and non-private OS without current privacy/security patches and it does not keep the standard Android privacy/security model intact. It's missing basic patches and protections. If you are at all about privacy and security, you'll be making a huge mistake in getting a device with /e/OS including anything sold by Murena. Murena has their own privacy invasive services baked into the OS, which are all around worse than just using Apple services.

@x_tof Benutzt du @graph noch, soll heißen: ist das alltagstauglich? Apps dann über F-Droid, oder? @e_mydata

@il_libraio @x_tof GrapheneOS is very suitable for everyday usage. It's much more stable than /e/OS and has much broader app compatibility. It stays up-to-date with current Android privacy/security patches, bug fixes and major OS updates rather than lagging years behind.GrapheneOS is much different from /e/OS due to being a hardened OS providing much better privacy and security than the Android Open Source Project rather than much worse. They're nearly direct opposites in that regard.

@il_libraio @x_tof Due to our privacy and security focus, we can't support most Android devices because they have much worse security than an iPhone or Pixel. Most OEMs are not even trying to provide competitive security and are failing at the basics of security patches and providing industry standard security features even years after iPhones and Pixels shipped them. We're working on trying to get a couple OEMs to improve things so we can add a couple more options, but not beyond that.

@il_libraio @x_tof Recommend the third party comparison at https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm which has a privacy focus and helps to shows how different the approaches between these operating systems are.LineageOS is focused on broad device compatibility and lots of UI tweaks/customization for power users, not privacy or security. /e/OS starts from forking LineageOS but rolls back security further and lags behind updates further. The services /e/OS is focused on bundling/promoting are problematic.

@il_libraio @x_tof You're far better off using the suite of end-to-end encrypted services from Proton or other options than the non-private, non-end-to-end encrypted Murena services. /e/OS including and promoting those is really a downside. Also worth noting that Murena services were largely down from early October 2024 to mid-February 2025, which was really a good thing for their users if they ended up moving to more private end-to-end encrypted services.

@GrapheneOS you don't have to convince me. I'm running your OS for a year already. ;-)But right now I have an issue when charging. When I connect the (Laptop/65W or 45W) charger it charges, immediately stops, then starts again, and stops, starts, and so on.After a reboot everything's fine again and it charges constantly.Have you heard this strange behavior, yet? It's like that for a few days. How could I investigate further?

@x_tof USB-C is notorious for cables degrading and becoming flaky due to being repeatedly bent. They're very fragile cables, even the higher end ones. The contacts also result in flaky connections with even a tiny bit of dust/dirt. Higher end cables require better contact and will lose the connection much more easily if the cable is jiggling around or has issues with the contact. Decent lower end cables not trying to provide as much bandwidth can be more tolerant of an imperfect connection.

@x_tof GrapheneOS can't support the Fairphone 5 because it doesn't meet our security requirements. It has no secure element, so disk encryption doesn't work for the majority of users with a PIN rather than a strong passphrase among other missing protections.Fairphone's operating systems don't massively roll back security like /e/OS but they do have 1-2 month delays for privacy/security patch backports and 1+ year delay for major updates, which impact other operating systems supporting it.

@x_tofFP5 also uses an ARMv8.2 SoC platform from 2021 meant for low-end industrial use cases that's missing the current generation security protections. More importantly, it's going to become an increasingly big problem for OS updates. They chose it because it has much cheaper long term support via partial security backports. It means the device is essentially obsolete from day 1.We do hope Fairphone improves and meets the requirements listed at https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices in the future.
