Please don't order lilies for your friends and lovers if they have a cat. Really... a gift of flowers for a cat owner is... I won't say it's *always* a bad idea, but consider if the cat owner has any house plants. If they have no house plants there is a *reason* for that. It's called: The Cat. You can have house plants OR a cat but not both. Cats chew on plants, and they will chew on lilies and get sick and possibly die. No, they don't know not to eat these plants. They dig right in.

Six years ago someone got me a huge bouquet of lilies. I knew that they were bad for cats, so I left them in the clear plastic wrapping as I made a call to a neighbor to give them away. As I was on the phone, #picaTheCat found the flowers, started unwrapping them. They had been in the apartment less than 5min and she was already on her way to eating them! It's THAT bad.

Pica was very upset and offended and meowed with great sadness when she was swiftly bodily removed from the flowers she wanted to eat. I put the flowers in the hall. I was shocked that she was so attracted to them, but is makes sense, she's always very excited by grass and other plants and loves to go outside in the roof garden.

@futurebird Even if your friend DOESN'T have a cat, please don't get the lilies unless you know it's ok. Usually my hayfever is only mild but lily pollen sets off everyone in the household, really badly. This can be prevented by cutting off the stamens before they ripen, but that's a tedious faff.

@futurebird this weekend I discovered tulips are in the lily family and also poisonous to cats. Good thing I checked before ordering them.

@futurebird Lillies are poisonous, yes. But to say all cats eat flowers/house plants? No. My 2 boys are 8 years old and have never in their lives chewed on anything green. But it is a great advice for those with cats too curious for their own good!

@futurebird hear me out, buy them a plant that the cat *can* eat, with the express intent of the cat eating it.

@futurebird All my cat-loving friends also have houseplants, because they tought their cats not to eat them.

@futurebird truly, they have no self preservation when it comes to plants. Mine frequently chomps on things that aren’t dangerous but that taste ATROCIOUS.

@futurebird If people want their cats chewing on beautiful flowers that won't kill them, Lego makes beautiful models.

@futurebird A friend of mine has a cat and various plants that are all non-toxic to cats. Still, it's better not to send flowers to a house with cats. Even if not harmful, a bunch of flowers suddenly showing up will be taken as an invitation to knock them over.

@futurebird Thanks for posting that. My wife lost a beloved kitty way too young because she had some lillies in the house and her cat got into them. She didn't, at the time, know any better. It's amazing to me that there's not, at the very least, a big warning when people buy flowers to wave them off lillies if they have cats at home.

@futurebird We have started to regift or sometimes throwing it away as soon as we recieve it. Most people do not know this about cats. Regifting is great, then when we tell the one that gave us the flowers that we regifted it because of our cat, they did not feel that it was entirely wasted 😊 Kinda like "They gave us the gift of giving a gift to someone else."

@futurebird I have a cat, and I do have house plants. The secret is to have a few plants that are safe for cats to eat, like Chlorophytum comosum (spiderplant), and put them in places where the cat(s) can easily reach them to chew on the leaves, while half of all of your other plants are cacti. Just keep anything out that is seriously toxic to cats, and keep all the plants that aren't there for the cats to chew on behind a wall of cacti.

@futurebird I'd already seen the image (and nodded soberly and thought "yup, good warning"). But for some reason, when I read the alt text, I suddenly busted a gut laughing. Something about reading the actual words "a cat photoshopped into a hazmat suit" just gave me a major dose of absurdity.Anyway, kudos for the info and the excellent alt text!
