Whatever sentence may emerge, whatever may happen on appeal (I'm assuming there's a right to appeal, perhaps wrongly, I know nothing about the French judicial system), I still want to congratulate France because - if nothing else - there's a willingness to see 'using excessive money to distort elections' as a bad thing that should be stopped. We could all do with more of that attitude, I think.

@RolloTreadway not familiar with the case but we kind of tried that in the USA. campaign donations are limited by donor for the express purpose of stopping what happens today.it just didn't end up working.

@RolloTreadway it functionally came down to individuals are allowed to market for their preferred candidates (free speech/expression/etc), which is why they ruled superpacs can't be stopped as long as they pinky swear not to collude with the candidate.scott adams had an episode some years ago asking about the one person one vote concept. legally its 1=1, but in practice some people control others. being rich enough to buy more ads or being a famous actor to just command followers to do stuff, now one person controls a thousand votes, and so on.its kind of hard to solve the problem in a 'correct' way. there are ham fisted ways that amount to immediate use of force, but you can't use those while also keeping a straight face about being a rule of law country. (rule of law has arguably failed in all countries, admittedly.)

@icedquinn Most countries manage just fine with having rules that control money in politics and consequences for breaching those rules. I'm sorry that the US has political courts that don't want such rules to exist.
