What would the "but in space" equivalent be of being a "storm chaser" eg. someone who tries to get close to tornados to feel their power and get photos?

@futurebird Ooo, I think it would be someone who tries to get as close to the event horizon of a black hole as possible, or possibly someone who would hang around a star before it went supernova (assuming they have had FTL travel!)

@futurebird oh, sorry, I didn't realize that we were NOT doing speculative fiction 😅

@mmezabet No I'm thinking for fiction. I like the black hole idea.

@futurebird Maybe the probes and satellites that monitor and explore space weather from the Sun, but they don't have people going "oh my God" in the front seats of a speeding car.

@futurebird uh, would you need to be a being that can feel gamma rays, speeding electrons, zooming protons, and alpha particles the way humans feel wind? A living Geiger counter?

@futurebird There was a sci-fi novel about folks whose recreation was to skim the corona of the sun for the comtagious high it gave them, Sundipper. In todays real world I think comet chasing might be doable--lots of action on the surface of the comet as volatiles boil off.

@OrionKidder @futurebird For a comet chaser in space; I can recommend Comet Interceptor: https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Comet_Interceptor

@futurebird @mmezabet watching so many event horizon related sci Fi, I always wondered if the event horizon of a black hole is stable. Does it "flare" directionally? Wobble?

@futurebird first thing that comes to mind is comet chaser (probably it doesn't fit but sounds very cool to me)

@futurebird @mmezabet Related but not quite what you're asking about is "Schools of Clay" by Derek Küntzken. It's a story about ceramic kite shaped interstellar creatures that evolved to skim the event horizon of a black hole when escaping from predators to use time dilation to jump way into the future past when the predators would be interested in them.
