Oh no! My friend Scot Kamins died! Four months ago. The nicest curmudgeon you'd ever meet. He'd got a bit hermitish in later years and so I didn't get to visit him. He wrote the big hypercard book for Apple, back when. Great guy. We were good friends in 80s and 90s. He wrote FIDO THE BOOK, the printed manual for FidoNet. We were regulars at Cafe Flore in San Francisco back when Doris Fish used to dance on the counter, and Mahmoud still worked there. He loved dogs. When I knew him his big dog Walter was the laziest dog in the world. But goofy sweet. I think that was the last time Scot put white carpeting in the living room. https://modernlib.com/FAQpages/modernlibFAQ/faqDogWhoAmI.html

@tomjennings I absolutely DEVOURED this book as a kid, I loved it so much. It had such a big influence on me that such a seemingly technical book could also be so full of humor! He will be missed!

@vga256 Yeah, its a great book! Kamins (as we all called him) was fkn hilarious. And sharp, and accepted no bullshit. FIDO THE BOOK is pretty good too, given the dull subject.

@tomjennings that’s awesome. it’s a real kick to the nads that apple - being apple ofc - never credited him in the book. i had no idea fido had an official manual until today. it looks like jason scanned in this version:https://archive.org/details/Fido_The_Book_Preliminary_Documentation_to_Fido_V12_By_Tom_Jennings/mode/1upis this the official printing of the book, or a review copy? i’d love to find a copy of it some day

@tomjennings no shit. that’s fantastic - total DIY printing. since i’ll never find one of these in a bazillion years on ebay, i’m going to print off my own and put a red cover on it. now i finally have an excuse to use a comb binding machine

@vga256 Lol a quick search for "FIDO THE BOOK" shows one hit: the archive.Alas, there never was a FIDO THE MOVIE. That was the pun, of course. Kamins', not mine.

@vga256 Yeah, Cafe Flore cafe hangout chatter and punning, Fido! The book! Soon, a movie! Who knows what's next! Knowing at the time that fkn NO ONE is gonna read the damn thing... lol.I probably still owe him money. I was supposed to pay him a cut of sales, which were umm modest and I was living in a warehouse and had no job, lol.

@tomjennings i would have watched it. ken burns presents: 2 hours of people grousing about other people on the other side of the planet with different values.i imagine he didn't miss all $19 from those sales. man, he had one hell of a track record with apple docs

@vga256 Lots of NO SWEARING ON MY BBS. MY BBS IS IN MY LIVING ROOM.I didn't realize til later this generally meant the sysop was spying on and showing off live messages to family and friends. Idiots.Everyone knew (sic) that , like all electronic systems, there is no privacy... but many sysops did have a postmaster mindset.

@tomjennings i seriously just did a wile e coyote eyeballs double-take. 30 years later and i did not once ever think my sysops were showing private messages to family and friends 🤣 shows how naive i was as a 14 year old cruising boards with people twice my agethe one thing that stood out to me with fido was how invective it could be. it immediately reminded me of my experiences on usenet (~a decade later)

@vga256 Oh yeah. but even that was weird: more than once, flaming sysops, ragging on each other horribly, face to face at a Con, would become good friends.... then later drift back into anger.People LIKED Cons, even if they were only annual and cost money. It would be cool to have fedi cons; I'd prbably go if it wasnt too expensive.

@tomjennings 😆 i can absolutely imagine that. the boyhood testosterone on the warez boards i belonged to was a wonder to behold. i can only imagine those same people as adults with money.i'd totally dig a west coast fedi con, would even fly out to it. of course, the most expensive place in north america to rent a room these days
