How much is a box of cereal? $8.45? USD What is going on? Us shelf stable and made of grain??? (Special K Plain the smallest of three sizes) The prices at the grocery make less and less sense.

@futurebird It's like $11-12 in Canada. I legitimately don't know how people afford cereal.

@futurebird Tracking the sales cycles of the different brands is my primary hobby these days (my preferred cereal was on sale for 1/3 of the normal price this week, stocked up!)

@futurebird yes! I stopped buying cereal in the US years ago because of this nonsense. 2lb oats: $44lb sugar: $30.75lb oats+sugar: $9

@futurebird Depends on the cereal. But my perspective is skewed since I have been used to paying a premium for the gluten-free ones.

Overnight steel cut oats not only sound much more posh, but they are also healthier and substantial as a meal. I just had an odd craving for the surprisingly sugary taste of Special K. For a "low calorie diet cereal" they are spectacularly un-nutritious.But, I'm no health nut, when I want to eat something I mostly do. Not this time. I'm not paying $9. It's not even in the wax paper packet. It's in plastic! You have to cut it with scissors to open it. Should cost the same a potato chips.

It occurs to me that the plastic bag inside of the box is so robust they ought to just sell it in that like the cheap brands. The box is just some odd tradition from some forgotten time.

@welshpixie The plastic bag inside, which is tough enough to survive a flood, is packed with air. They would be as safe as chips are.

@futurebird Steel cut oats in a pressure cooker like instant pot takes 20 minutes. This is what I do almost everyday. Top it with some berries or fruit, yogurt, seeds, nuts, etc. Very satisfying.

@futurebird I've been getting it from Costco, which is closer to $3.50/box. That doesn't help if you don't have a Costco nearby. However, their prices *have* been inching upwards, too.

@futurebird yes, college breakfast used to be from a clear plastic sack of "LOOPED FRUITS" and their market looked like they were selling LSD

@futurebird @welshpixie but the potato chips are shipped in larger boxes so they don't get crushed, and the bags don't pop, and so they can stack them. but cereal does just come in celophane bags as well, from other brands. but those are probably also shipped in larger boxes.

@burnitdown @welshpixie I don't know. I still feel like if you are going to have a plastic bag in there and not waxed paper the box is just performative. Takes up space in the cabinet. And you have to use a binder clip on it or it goes soggy. Never mind how eating things out of plastic makes me feel depressed.

@davidr Try a slow cooker, or just go lower heat longer time. They are time consuming but worth it.

@futurebird You've surely heard of "shrinkflation" by now. It's a very real thing. I saw it particularly during the earlier years of the current pandemic as companies used that as a convenient excuse to keep people from looking into it too much. (I would have accepted it if it had only happened during the shortages, but then prices stayed high or weights stayed low. Or both...)There should have been an investigation, but our government is what it is so here we are.

There is at least one cereal brand that does that. Their shipping boxes go on the grocery shelf as anti-crush full of plastic resealable bags. The resealable plus the color print on the bags is… not worse than just resealable? I don’t think any of the mixed plastics can go into plastic film recycling.I would outlaw all non-food safe-compostable printing on all our disposable boxes and bags though. No shiny full color cardboard going straight to the bins at all. @futurebird
