I hear people are doing a surprise-pikachu about Discord's new ad push?https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/03/discord-heightens-ad-focus-by-introducing-video-ads-to-mobile-apps-in-june/Truly surprising that a *checks notes* proprietary, centralized, VC-funded platform started enshittifying the moment it gained enough market share to make it very difficult for people to flow elsewhere. 🤯Nobody saw that coming! :blobcat0_0: :blobcatcoffee: #Discord #WalledGardens

Any people reading this who rely on Discord: this is your nudge to consider moving elsewhere.Where? I don't know. What I do know is that whatever alternative I suggest, you will find a myriad of reasons why it just "won't cut it."But I also know that if resources were spent on making the hard-to-enshittify decentralized platforms better, they would get better, while still remaining hard to enshittify. So, perhaps it's worth it to trade some short-term convenience for long-term resilience. 🤷‍♀️

@rysiek What is the FOOS software that can best do what discord does? (This question also applies to Facebook Groups) Mainly making it very easy to create chat, file-sharing and posting spaces, to delegate moderation (many content creators use this "honor" masterfully ... but also in a way that makes me give them side eye about the free parasocial fueled labor)Qualms aside is there any contender for a best replacement?

@futurebird best I can do is:https://mstdn.social/@rysiek/114201644002543556Whatever alternative I point to, there is going to be a million reasons people offer as to why they are not "good enough."Proprietary, centralized, VC-funded platforms suck the air and funding out of the room, such that ethical, decentralized alternatives have huge difficulty with finding a mindshare.Either we recognize this and make a conscious effort to support ethical tech even if it's not as slick, or we are doomed to pikachu-face.

@futurebird @rysiek the main one to me was always matrix, with matrix's big selling point over irc that its an easier switch from discord

@futurebird @rysiek #mattermost does a lot of the stuff Discord does and is F/LOSS. It's been buggy lately, but usually it works well so I'm hoping they will fix the issues soon.

@futurebird @rysiek Another non answer. With open standard protocols, there can be multiple software implementations, with different feature-sets and preferences. The usual difficulty with open standard protocols is need for backwards compatibility to ensure that existing implementations remain functional, new features in the protocol taking time to arrive at the users or not arriving at all due to choices of the developer. Whereas, proprietary protocols and software can lure users with faster rollout of new features, due to centralized development and organization. Formation of walled gardens as well as network effect leads to user domestication. For-profit ventures, due to their incentive structure, can not be expected to develop and maintain open standard protocols, FOSS implementations and services in this problem domain. Federated and decentralized open platforms can survive and thrive, where the cost is borne by the community.Read more about this situation in the following articles authored by @Seirdy:https://seirdy.one/posts/2021/01/27/whatsapp-and-the-domestication-of-users/https://seirdy.one/posts/2021/02/23/keeping-platforms-open/
