I think the whole "what kind of CAR does he have?" dating culture persists in NYC in part because having a car is such a horrible pain in this town. It is suffering. Everything about a car is more expensive. It's not going to do much for you at all. You can't park it. You can't drive it (enjoy sitting in traffic.) So as far a peacock plumage goes it's still a big signal. Personally, I think if you can't afford a full time driver too? It's an objective downgrade in quality of life.

@neckspike These were those stickers from Uber that identifies the car as for hire. Also that sound SO ANNOYING.

@neckspike Even more annoying because you never want to express any emotion around cops, they're so unpredictable. So, I'd feel trapped being nice and concerned about saying anything assertive. Which I hate.

@futurebird The thing I've been wondering since yo described this whole scene is: Do the boys know what an expensive purse looks like? I wouldn't expect them to pay that much attention to women's fashion.

@rehana That is an excellent question. My impression from decades ago what that the it was Not OK for a guy to know "too much" about the purses, however I suspect they know a lot more than they let on. And the status of the girls has to do with the purses (and especially having a good collection and getting good deal on 'genuine' articles)Accusations of passing off fakes can be fighting words.

@futurebird I regard owning a car as a sign of poverty. It implies that you can't afford to live somewhere civilised with decent public transport.

@futurebird When I had my Tucson I never drove it into Manhattan south of 125th because traffic is horrible. Other than that it was great being able to get from point A to point B without needing to transfer buses.
