I've written a bit before about the expensive purse and car scene that orbits the 'luxury' shops on Madison and 5th Ave. in NYC. These are mostly young people 15-25 from NJ, The Bronx, Deepest Brooklyn, SI and Queens. They are mostly non-white. The way it works is the boys rent, or borrow (almost never own) impressive cars and park them in front of expensive purse shops to pick up girls who are also fictionally shopping for 5k purses. 1/

I have been dismayed to discover the a Tesla is still an acceptable car for these purposes but I think it would be trivial to disrupt this. And not even cyber trucks, I saw some young men from *my* neighborhood getting prepped to go down the other day with the most boring work-a-day red tesla and an obscenely large Bluetooth speaker. I didn't say anything, I have a certain gravitas as an older little teacher lady but it is the wrong gravitas for this project. 2/

@futurebird Aaannnddd I just remembered every early 2000s or so sitcom where someone invariably would get the idea to buy stuff they couldn't afford on credit then return it before time ran out.Of course it always got damaged/broken, or they lost their receipts, lol.

What would be needed are some girls their age, a group of three maybe. And all they need to do is giggle a little. Maybe post a video "they think they really did something" -- just a little of this kind of content could bump those cars off of the list. I'm not a fan of the whole "culture" but I also consider it none of my business and from a certain perspective it's endearing. But it kills me to see these kids thinking there is any status at all in this brand. 3/

@futurebird do they both know it's fictional? Or some of them think "ooo this one's rich" ?

You can keep your Prada, your Gucci, your Ferrari and Bugatti. But showing up with a tesla is an insult to all those girls who have gone to so much trouble to be dressed nice with just the right purse on their arm! Have a little respect. Might as well show up with a Kia. (It is in fact worse than a Kia, but I think simply saying it's too low rent is the fastest path to knocking Tesla off of the list for these kids.)

@DrorBedrack The younger ones might not know, they might think that someone there is for real... but I think at some level it's all a game and that's part of the fun. Pretending to be a kind of person that doesn't exist.

My local boys with their red tesla borrowed it from their uncle and were trying to figure out how to disguise the fact that it was, in fact, just the uber their uncle drives and bought used. From our conversation I got the idea that one of them was *supposed* to be working for him on his account but getting the car cleaned up and going down to the upper east was their real focus. Which makes me feel for them a little. It's a vicious world.

I remember the sadness and horror of getting water on my new air jordans... my only ticket into the mysterious world of cool that MTV promised me really existed. Meanwhile, I had no idea that some of the other kids at my school were trying to copy my vintage bike... a balloon framed monstrosity.Young people will always try to crack, to create, and hack these cultural codes. I just think tesla shouldn't be in the mix at all. It should be a joke.

@futurebird we have something similar in London and other big cities with rented or borrowed luxury cars and the Black and Desi (British Asian) communities, but interestingly EV's (of any make) aren't popular on this scene (it might be because European government are fairly pro-EV and thus they become "uncool" as they are associated with the "nanny state")

@futurebird There’s a lot wrong with social media (even the fediverse) but I forgive all that when I read something exquisite like this thread. Thank you for your humanity.

@VirginiaHolloway I'm glad you liked it. I've been watching this whole thing for years and might write a story about it some day. This was the other thread. The whole tesla being in the mix thing bugs me. https://sauropods.win/@futurebird/114053794811640247

I don't know what they did about that big "T" on the plates. It's obviously a black car. They were arguing over if they'd be in trouble if they removed the windshield stickers. (I think they had to leave them.)

@futurebird But is the goal here to find the loves of their lives, or to pick up a hottie?

@Burn_this_ It's a mix from what I can see. Another goal is just fitting in generally.

@futurebird @Lyle I lived near "the drag" in our town as a kid. Every now and then we'd get stuck in the cruising traffic 😄 I think I drove around with friends only once. By the time I was a teen girls and boys both were driving with our windows down honking at friends. Or in a convertible if you were really lucky! I don't know how many people actually met anyone new!
