@grey @r000t Run flat tires are kind of garbage - a lot of damage to tires is the kind of damage run-flat tires can't handle - so when a tire gets damaged in a way a sealant kit can't repair (and a run-flat tire can't handle), you really need a spare tire, but you don't have one (and you can enjoy paying Mr towman).The extra material needed for run-flat tires furthermore increases the weight of the tires and therefore you only get a minor weight saving over a full sized spare.The real reason is how the company can get (negligibly) more profit if they don't include an extra tire (since 4 tires with extra material costs a fraction less.).

To be fair, the one time I tried to use my spare I found out it had dry rotted to the point where there was a massive hole in the sidewall, rendering it completely useless. Not saying you shouldn't know how to put the spare on, just be aware that the shelf life is significantly less than 20 years.

@r000t 70% of my trunk space is eaten up by the wheel and tire I bought for my car. The donut alcove under the trunk mat cannot hold a full size tire. This is aggravating.

@r000t My wife had a Kia soul that didn't come with a spare.I went to a junkyard and found a pristine spare out of a Honda that matched the Kia lug pattern.

@Hoss @gentoobro @r000t All tires have date codes stamped on them. If an unused tire is 10yrs+ old you shouldn't use it. Doesn't matter if it's NOS. The rubber goes bad & it dry rots. Don't trust your vehicle & life with it. The real issue is automobile owners used to all be mechanically inclined to a degree. Owners were hobbyists, enthusiasts, or had people in their lives who were. All of them worked on their own vehicles & general maintenance & visual inspections of the running gear & suspension were extremely common. The Japanese cars of the late 80's-90's were so reliable when combined with modern convenience culture have completely eroded casual do-it-yourself culture. Not only do most people not know how to change a tire / have a spare? But they don't even check tire pressure without a light from a tpms or totally flat. A few psi low or high can affect gas mileage & tire longevity. Nobody checks oil levels unless there's an issue. Nobody looks under the radiator cap, checks along the block, intake manifold, or transmission for signs of leaks, checks brakes, corrosion of unibody/underside etc. Hell nobody services a diff pre-emptively. They just wait for failure. The big issue isn't a lack of education. The information has been out since the release of the automobile. It just nobody cares, they wait for something to fail and have zero interest.
