Can you think of anything that works like this: If you have “Trait A” you just know who has “Trait B” and who doesn’t. If you have “Trait B” you can tell who has “Trait A” — no one knows traits *also* give the ability to identify. It’s possible to have neither or both traits. If you have both you *still* cannot tell the difference between A and B. You only know that all people with a particular trait are somehow *different* from those without.

@futurebird this sounds like pheromones based sexual selection...

@futurebird This sounds like it might touch on those studies about MHC diversity and whether people like the smell of someone else's sweat? But it's not quite that...

@futurebird it's been said that if you put two drug users in a room with 50 other people the drug users will find each other.

@futurebird The closest I can think of is pheromones with yeast. Haploid Mat A cells secrete mat A factor. Mat alpha cells secrete mat alpha factor. Diploids and other weird combos do not secrete either.A Mat alpha cell have a receptor for Mat A factor, they can tell if another cells is mat A, but not if it is mat alpha or diploid or weird.Conversely, Mat A can sense mat alphas but not self or diploids.

@futurebird can Trait A and Trait B be the same? or do they need to be strictly different?

@futurebird To clarify:My undertanding (assuming the entities are "people", and using reductive labels for conciseness below):U1. A person can have either A, B, both (AB), or neither (X)U2. B can identify A and vice-versaQuestions:Q1. An AB person can tell when another person is not-X (i.e., is either A or B), but cannot tell which variant (A vs B) they have?Q2. Nobody (A, B, AB, or X) knows that U2 happens, even though U1 is widely known?

@futurebird The first thing that comes to mind for me is autism? If you’re on the spectrum, you may not know it, but you know neurotypical people are different. And vice versa.

@futurebird I thought I understood the first paragraph, until I read the second paragraph. Then I felt helplessly confused.

@futurebird The only thing I can think of that really fits all the criteria is "cool" and "uncool".And yes, I maintain that someone very much can be both or neither.

@futurebird Unscientifically, I think societal in-groups have so many subtle signifiers that this sort of type-recognition must be common with any two or more people.

@futurebird Hmm. The AB's seem trickiest. It almost sounds like AB's are behind some kind of filter that collapses the images of A's and B's to be in-differentiable? Like some sort of adaptive cognitive response due to trauma or cognitive dissonance?
