@lovelymiss Wild tone swings, basically stupid and pointless, sentimental and attempting to combine the sensibility of a grindhouse masturbator (Dante) with a shmaltzy sentimentalist (Spielberg).Only good things are Chris Walas' excellent puppets and Dick Smith's performance. Even Phoebe Cates is entirely wasted.

@judgedread @lovelymiss it didn't take much more than mystic Asian stuff and good puppeteering back then. As most movie series went on, they all included more of the unique aspects that made the original. Gremlins had more gremlins in stranger setups.Freddy had weird kills and a pizza made out of kids souls (what a foreshadow) Jason got to chop chop chopChucky had more catch phrases Puppet Master had more puppetsTremors had Bert Never saw Critters, but I can assume it had more critters rolling around.

@judgedread @db The 80s really were pushing all that pretty hard. Bum Fuck Wyoming had a black history teacher in 1984, teaching the Genghis Khan invasions. I've been propagandized my entire life, even in my childhood right-wing fantasy movies.

@judgedread Gremlins is essentially about niggers. It’s an allegory for a dangerous invasive species that is brought into a safe, white, Midwestern small town courtesy of misguided pathological altruism, and the invasive species proceeds to multiply uncontrollably and terrorize the place in sadistic orgy of destruction.

@judgedread @lovelymiss I saw it for the first time last yearMommy wouldn't let me see it in the theaters because it was too violent and degenerateNow having seen it, I gotta go with the Judge on this one. There's a sleazy exploitation thing going on in the 80s jewish movies that, upon seeing them now, I get outraged

@KarlDahl Joe Dante is, as far as I know, not a jew. But his mindset is so jewed from too much exploitation cinema that he might as well be. He's a typical hipster, everything is ironic, everything is laughable. His invocation of It's a Wonderful Life is entirely insincere, and probably done to placate Spielberg - who wanted a commerically successful film after having released a few duds - Twilight Zone (also with a Dante segment), 1941 and Used Cars.

@KarlDahl @judgedread @lovelymiss Movies can be dangerous things. I badgered my mother to take me to see Logan's Run when it opened. I was 10. God decided I was not ready to see Jenny Agutter naked, so I got violently sick, we left; I was home for a week with a 105F fever which sterilized me. No, I'm not kidding. Movies are dangerous.

@bloggerski It's a cult film. I finally watched it and thought it was good but it doesn't stand out. It's telling that even when top talent is involved movies are at best a 50/50 bet. That's why the tentpole model is very risky. If the franchises stop working you're screwed.
