It’s important you understand this.The people in this photo were residents of the USA that were denied due process. They were rounded up and shipped to a prison in El Salvador—without trial, without evidence—simply on suspicion of gang affiliation. This was done in defiance of our American courts that deemed the action illegal.They could be legal residents. They could be innocent bystanders. They could be asylum seekers. For all we know, they could be U.S. citizens.

@futurebird it is because even if they are gang members they deserve humane treatment in jails, the law has to be fair as well as punitive. promote mastodon on X its the best way to take away their power

@futurebird i dont think its their necks but they are chained in the back. usually this is for the show even if its gruesome. they are not chained all the time. still, this is close to medieval and shouldnt be in a modern society even if they are all gangmembers. in any case promote mastodon on X its the only way to cut their power

@futurebird @alexlunaview The chain is connected to both wrists behind the back, you can see that if you zoom in on the second captive. The men with black ski masks apply a "Nelson"-hold to them, forcing the arm back and up and the neck down, forcing them to stoop.

@alexlunaview I think this image is especially revolting because it's staged. From the clean space, to the uniforms, the masks to hide the identity of the guards being the only thing that hints at the shame. It's that transition from things that happen in US prisons every day in secret, to taking a perverse pride in it that makes this so vile. "Look at how organized, how efficiently we strip men of their humanity."Without realizing that their charges aren't they only ones being degraded.

I'm not naive enough to think that the world can't exist without violence, that there isn't ever a person who might need to be treated so badly for some obscure reason. And really, even if there are some people who can't be trusted to be free around others because they keep returning to violence none of what's going on in this photo is needed. None of this ritual of subjugation and this attempt to project power through it. It's a very old kind of propaganda.

I was naive when I thought that if someone was in prison there was probably a good reason for it. That is what is "naive" blindly trusting the state, and trappings of power to always be correct despite all of the evidence from history that anyone can can these tools. What makes you think you are so experienced and so wise exactly?

The only thing we know for sure is that they are victims of a crime, having been deported and imprisoned without due process. If they are so demonstrability of heinous crimes, why not prosecute them in court where their alleged "crimes" can be brought to light?

@magicalthinking @alexlunaview You are VERY incorrect.Though I do wonder if the police I reached out to for help had been able to help if they hadn't shown only casual interest in finding out what really happened who was *really* responsible ... would that have left me with a better impression? Maybe, but there are too many other examples of broken trust and evidence that their primary focus is not "keeping people safe."

You just see the trappings of power who is wearing the boots and who is being kicked and assume that it must be for a good reason. And this is because you have never recognized that this kind of power can be abused. I could give you examples, but you'd file them as exceptions rather than a pattern. The notion that without such violence we'd be at the mercy of criminals is nonsense.

My dad was in prison with plenty of Mexican and South American gang members back in the day. Almost all down on drug charges, just like my dad. This is for show, for the cruelty.
