As machine learning image generators come to play a role in the creation of more and more of the images we see, images that have a quality of clearly NOT being generated will increasingly be at a premium: their power and impact will increase. It used to be that having a nice color pallet and touching on the full spectrum in a photo made it "better" but image generators do this trivially. So 'bad' color composition has more weight now. As does poor spatial composition.

@futurebird this feels of a piece with tying your bowtie slightly wonky to make it clear it's not pre-tied

@futurebird Won't the generators catch up with this with additional training on such images?

@mansr Yes. But this is the gap of the moment.

@futurebird yes and to add to this: for years, event photographers were seen a bit like "less than" by the photography community. Fashion shoots and portraits were seen as the real thing, the apex for the profession.Guess what? AI can generate all kinds of photos but it cannot capture meetings, conferences, weddings and birthday parties. So professional event photographers now have a leg up so to speak.

@futurebird I wonder, though, which easily recognisable qualities are hardest for the machines to capture.

@mansr @futurebird they'll always be behind thoughthere is feedback into human creative processes by virtue of generative images simply existing - people will route around the aesthetic, subvert it or antagonize itgenerators also are technically limited in what they can generate, people will find those limitations and use them as stylistic devices

@futurebird I saw this happen in myself due to viewing so many photos online where people worked hard hit all of the metrics of a “good” image. I started to prefer trying to take “bad” or “wrong” images that I still like. Also, no edits, crops, color correction allowed, just to make it more of a challenge. It’s a pretty fun game, actually, thanks computers!

@futurebird Agree with you, and also I feel like this actually started some years ago with the absolute onslaught of images shared online, and as use of phone cameras, which default to auto-everything, eclipsed other cameras. Things have slowly been trending toward the point you're talking about, IMO.

@futurebirdYes! It wasn't until I got my first DSLR - around the same time iPhone was released, then Flickr became a thing that my 'photo sensibilities' became really honed.Being able to spot / feel an IPhone picture vs a Non-iPhone Vs DSLR one, left me feeling sad. Glossy post processing was making everything look / feel the sameIt's even more apparent with photos of the Night SkyExample : all Samsung phone Moon Pics look the same - because they are ! https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/13/23637401/samsung-fake-moon-photos-ai-galaxy-s21-s23-ultra

@futurebird That is really nice of you to say! Most of them are just on my camera roll. The closest thing I have is a Pixelfed page - they don’t all break the rules, but it keeps me amused & observant. https://pixelfed.social/extinpanther

@uguisubari @futurebird For a while I had an anonymous blog where I posted Wabi-Sabi inspired photos of just textures in fabrics and rusting metal in public architecture. I swear Blogger made it entirely invisible. Only one person ever viewed it, and that was an artist friend who was doing something similar with textures in pen and ink drawings.
