Sometimes when I make a short story or drawing I get the response "this is like ---" and it always annoys me a little at first. At some point I got the idea that if something had be "done" it wasn't worth doing again, or doing differently, or doing better. I have to remind myself it's not at attempt to shut down the idea.Given that my *favorite* kind of response is when someone starts riffing and making their own story. You'd think I'd get this at a deeper level.

I blame my older brother who always appraised my creative ideas based on how well they would do commercially as a part of his ongoing campaign to convince me that there was no profit in creative work.(jokes on him I'm not in it for the profit)

Like, in a way he "won" this argument. I do not make creative things for profit and I don't care about it at all. Great job!

@futurebird There's a big difference between "that's just a variation on this other (better) story" and "that reminds me of another story I really liked." Where one puts you down, the other elevates you by deeming you worthy of being compared to a (presumably) more famous author.

Heck it's even worthwhile to do something that has been "done" and do it WORSE. Because YOU did it for your own reasons and that matters.

@futurebird This has been a big barrier to me starting writing. I read a lot and just feel cowed and inferior with all the amazing writers out there. I need to reframe.

@futurebird I am well aware that I tend to do this (or rather tended, when in a writing group). And it is, for me, about classifying the story so that I can understand it in a context. I might comment that "This is reminiscent of xxxx" meaning not that it is derivative, but that it is possible aimed at the same market, the same readership. And in some cases, meaning "This is reminiscent of this global success, so you really do have some talent here, and it is potentially commercial" - whether or not the person wanted to market it commercially.

@futurebird You know what got me into writing? The same thing, but backwards. Endless hybris of "I can do that, but better".The older I get, the more I think it's true. And not because I got better at writing 😖

@futurebird in high school in an Literature class talking about the hero's journey / monomyth (I have some issues with this idea but that's beside the point) and my teacher said "there is nothing new under the sun"That may sound like something demotivating, but I try to think of it as something freeing. It's not a "why try" but "why not do it the way you want"Also I think a lot of authors / creators probably get seeds of their ideas from other things. Not like a "file off the serial numbers off this fanfiction and now I can sell it as original work" but more like "I like this character dynamic in this TV show but it would be more interesting if that dynamic had to overcome X Y and Z which is not in the original show" which it's like you can do fanfiction that way admittely, but you can also do original work that way. Take it, make it your own

@futurebird I think play is hugely underappreciated. It's how we explore & practice & strengthen the skills that make us resourceful. A kitten pounces on her brother's tail. He turns around and bowls her over. Both kittens have learned a bit about hunting, fighting, and what their bodies can do. I think human hobbies serve the same purpose: a low stakes way to experiment & learn. Monetizing a hobby changes the focus from my needs to the buyer's needs. Play now needs to compete for headspace.
