There are few concepts as embarrassing and horrible just due to their name as "The Mandela Effect" mostly because the headline example they choose is so obviously people who pay no attention to South Africa or really anything not in the US and maybe Europe confusing Stephen Biko with Nelson Mandela. To instead decide "no, it's impossible that I just don't pay attention, must be alternate universes." IDK. It ruins a fun creepy idea for me if I'm honest.

Of course maybe mixed in with all the people who just mixed up the activists is the one *real* person from the alternate universe where Mandela "died in Prison."But, I've never met anyone who could play this role convincingly.

@futurebird Hopefully there aren't problems with calling it the Berenstain Bears effect.

@futurebird I'm from the alternate universe where it's called the "Mandala Effect" and I do not understand why one day everyone started calling it the "Mandela Effect"

@futurebird I always wondered about that one. Your explanation makes sense.

@futurebird Until I saw your post right now, I did not know that this was based on people thinking he had died in prison. I had thought it was people swearing his last name had been spelled Mandala.

@mcc I mean sand drawings that must be destroyed after one day has some resonance with the concept.

@futurebird sadly, I don’t know much about Stephen Biko other than his name and I think Peter Gabriel had a song about him. I did know that if Nelson Mandela had died in prison his later becoming president of South Africa would have been even bigger news.

@futurebird It's an embarrassing name for an embarrassing thing, but it's also perfect because it sort of confuses Mandela with Mandala. Like maybe people "remember" that Nelson Mandela must have been named after a Buddhist image often used as a many-worlds concept that represents the Mandela Effect.

@mcc @futurebird I'm from the universe where it's the Berenstain Effect, and I'm not at all confused why a bunch of white people would rather believe a famous black man died in prison.

@NinjaDebugger @mcc Mandela is positively regarded generally, mostly because he made a lot of concessions to the original mission. (And we could debate the utility and ethics of that.)I sometimes think that it's hard for people to imagine a radical Black activist of that era being well regarded today and NOT dead as those who stick to their guns are always demonized.

@futurebird @NinjaDebugger @mcc the mandela effect was getting everyone in the big tent to pull more or less in the same direction. that was his original mission and it was amazing
