Hey open source nerds, what’s your personal device setup, and how do you handle the “cloudy” bits, like sync, email, calendars, document sharing, photos, that sort of stuff?#OpenSource

@john I'm currently using a combination of Google crap and ProtonMail. I plan to continue to use ProtonMail for e-mail for now but I will move everything else NextCloud on my VPS over VPN (so that it's not exposed to the Internet) when I get the energy.

@qwc You run your own email server? What do you use, and do you have any problems with delivery?

@john I use radicale for calendar and contacts on a VPS. I became dissatisfied with the lagginess of #Nextcloud . Also the frequent manual upgrades.

@john For syncing around files, I use tools like syncthing, magic wormhole, the SFTP server within OpenSSH, and occasionally old-school rsync

@john Not really. I have several giant folders of photos that I mean to organize someday. My tendency is to use properly organized filesystem structures for this kind of thing but I may need to an actual GUI program for this someday.

@john Ooooh, I forgot to mention KDE connect. Which is what I use for that, and which is *incredibly* awesome. It's an app (Android and iOS) that will integrate a phone and Linux PC (not necessarily KDE) and do file transfers, media control, notification sharing, etc.It uses the local Wi-Fi, so you need to be on the same LAN and disable VPNs for that.

@john Nextcloud, hosted by Manitu. Reasonably simple to setup, maintain, and administer for a layperson.

@john My laptop runs Windows 10 and I use stand alone Office for email and calendar. I use a hosting company for my domain and share documents through it. I use GitHub but am switching to codeberg.org for my repositories. I don’t put photos online. When I did Linux development it was on my various employers’ Linux boxes but most of my post retirement projects have been Python via VS Code.

@john Combination of an email provider I trust (posteo.de) and a personal Nextcloud instance for most other things. Nextcloud is on my own hardware.Oh, and of course everything is managed with nixOS ;)
