The "Women love me, fish fear me." ball-cap floats on the dark river. You slow the motor of the zodiac and let the river carry you closer to pick it up. Not hint of the owner. Without the motor running, the water grows very still. Out of the corner of your eye you see a wave, or... perhaps, no no no it *must* have been a wave, not a fish, no river fish is *that* large. (But is any wave so powerful? So sinuous? )

@futurebird Reminds me of the McGuffin from _Legacy_of_Heorot_ (eliminate the one man-eating river monster and you get a plague of them as the juveniles now have no predator)

I used to not think about giant river fish eating people (well not this often) but I've changed a lot over the past few years.

Consider how one might reimagine the soundtrack of Jaws, but for a swampy freshwater context. It'd need to be a more mellow and round creeping sort of dread. And there would never be blood in the water, never gnashing teeth or sudden movements. Your fishing buddy simply vanishes with an elegant *sploosh* if you happen to look away. And if we want to be ironic why not let it be a massive carp. A former pet goldfish who has see our world and knows what must be done.

@futurebird c.f. the short story "God's Hooks!" by Howard Waldrop.Apparently set shortly after the Great Fire of London, it starts as kind of slice of life vignette about a gathering of dudes who just love eating and catching fish. Toward the end takes on themes of faith, obsessive pursuit of The Big One, and apocalypse.https://www.lexal.net/scifi/scifiction/classics/classics_archive/waldrop5/waldrop51.html#FantasyFiction

@ErictheCerise @Fat_Farang I do see one big problem with a cicada based horror film. And mostly it's that cicada look like this:๐Ÿ‘m๐Ÿ‘They are just derpy little guys. Here is a drawing I did of one last year.

@kittizontal @TheBreadmonkey One day I was in school early trying to fix the laser cutter in the makerspace and singing this... really belting it out (I know all the lyrics of THIS version) then one of the history teachers walked in out of nowhere (the school is normally DEAD at that hour) I'm a bit embarrassed and switch to awkward humming (totally stopping would have been worse and more obvious I think) she says: "ha ha forgot the lyrics?"I stop. Pause for FAR too long. Then say "Yes."
