On February 19th 2025 at approximately 10:40pm UTC, baraag went offline after an affiliate of the site decided to terminate their media storage services with us.After 6 long days, baraag is finally back online with new service providers. This would not have been possible without the help of several people (if you’re reading this then you know who you are and forever have my gratitude).

However, I must admit to some terrible news. During the recovery process, we discovered that the worst thing that could happen to an online artist community has happened to baraag: the automated backup system we had for disaster recovery has not been functioning as we expected for some time, and its issues remained un-diagnosed until this past week. Thus, we have permanently lost a significant amount of media uploaded to baraag since August 2024.

We were able to restore a fraction of the lost media thanks to the assistance of another Mastodon server admin who kindly provided a partial cache of baraag's data since August 2024. But while we tried to recover what we could, we regret to inform our users that there are still significant gaps in the affected time period that will be missing forever. We suspect that baraag users with very few followers will be the most affected by data loss.

In the nearly 8 years of our existence, baraag has now experienced almost every point of failure conceivable. We have been banned from being funded by popular patronage platforms. We have had a server host provider suspend their service with us. We have had a registrar seize our baraag.net domain name. We have lost our DNS service provider and CDN service provider. Our object storage service provider for media was terminated. And finally, our automated backup system failed.

2025年2月19日午後10時40分ごろ（世界標準時）、当サイトの提携先が当社におけるメディアストレージサービスの提供を終了したことにより、baraagが一時的に利用不能になりました。約10日間の長い戦いを経て、baraagはようやく新しいサービスプロバイダと提携し、復旧しました。これには複数の方々のご支援がありました（心当たりのある方もいらっしゃるでしょう、心より感謝いたします）。しかし、一点良くないニュースを告げなければなりません。復旧作業中に明らかになったのは、オンラインアーティストコミュニティにとって最悪の事態がbaraagに発生したということです——我々が災害復旧用として導入していた自動バックアップシステムが予想通り動作していないことが復旧時に初めて判明したのです。そのため、2024年8月以来baraagにアップロードされたほとんどのメディアデータが永久に失われてしまいました。

他のMastodonサーバー管理者の協力により、一部のデータは回復することができましたが、欠損データのほとんどは回復不能であることが判明しました。特にフォロワー数の少ないユーザーへの影響が大きいだろうと思われます。サービス開始から8年間、baraagは起こり得る最も厳しい課題のほとんどを経験してきました。支援型プラットフォームからの資金提供が禁止されたり、ホスティング事業者によってサービス中断に追い込まれたり、ドメイン登録業者にbaraag.netの所有権を奪われたり、DNSやCDNプロバイダとの契約解消を迎えたり……そして今回の件も。それら全てを耐え抜いてきました。これからもbaraagの存続の為に可能な限り努力を続けます。この逆境にもかかわらず、コミュニティを支え続けてくださる皆様に心から感謝申し上げます。

@satori Well I mention you respectfully all the time in my blog.. During times like this things are much harder...Losing our right to create what we want makes being an artist tragically difficult for me. I spent a few days trying to figure out if I should either quit, or resort to censoring myself on X/Twitter. When I wasn't able to attract enough followers because I wasn't very active, and had to censor myself too. The depression level was surreal as hell, I did feel like just quitting.

Curious just in case: Do you have friends or acquaintances in other states or countries, who could take over and host the platform if someday you may not be able to?It strongly feels like we need mirrors hosted in multiple points across the world, independent of any single service. @satori I have noticed some posts from before August 2024 that are also broken. I have found posts from Jan and Feb of 2024 and even Dec 2023 that are broken. Is it possible that the automated backup system had some issues before August or is it possible that these images are just not back up yet?

@scumbubbl Yea I noticed posts from earlier than August were missing as well. The earliest I have seen so far was a single post from December of 2023 but so far it seems mostly contained to 2024 images that are missing.

@satori Thanks you so much for keep this site online. Though I wonder if the images not loading/broken images had something to do with the failed storage provider. I say it loosely because on Whalebird and on my IPad (it's the web version), most images load perfectly fine (not videos though but the thumbnail show) so I don't know if I should reupload all of them or wait for a bit. I honestly don't want to reupload them, only to find out they worked next day.
