I just got the news that Skype will shut down this May. Let's collect our funniest, greatest, and worst Skype experiences to honor this proprietary software that makes us all think of a simpler time before Discord or Zoom. I'll start...

Around 2016 when Skype first added third party bots to the UI, which allowed you to directly message bots, or even add to group chats, there was not really anything that distinguished a bot message from a real user's message. Meaning even bots couldn't differentiate whether their input came from a user, or a bot, or whether their output would be used by another bot!I was not aware of this, so the moment I saw this feature I added every bot that the platform showed into the one group chat my friendgroup and I had. A tic tac toe bot, a roleplay Doctor Who bot, some random sports newscaster guy bot...I think it was over one hundred bots that I added, since I simply wanted to explore the feature to the fullest. In the beginning we just played around with them, none of these bots were AI, but rather text based RPGs or help bots that just accepted a multitude of input. Most of them were never designed to be used in a group setting and got constantly confused. However, when the Doctor Who (Peter Capaldi, at the time) bot sent some random message about starting our adventure, the Tic Tac Toe bot sent a response which the Doctor Who bot took as a legitimate reply. It was a bot-on-bot interaction which neither side knew or understood of. When I realized this, I added all the bots, which all began speaking to one another. Very often a bot would just send the message that whatever was said as an input, wasn't seen as a legitimate input, which then was used for a different bot as an input to respond to that it wasn't a legitimate input, and so on. Within minutes the group became completely unreadable as more messages popped in than the eye could follow. The next day, over 10,000 messages were sent in the chat. Me and all of my friends left the chat and made a new one, with just us, and the rule that no bots were allowed.I sometimes wonder whether these bots still message each other to this day, as the group chat still existed, even when we all left...

This is basically the story of Isaac Asimov's “I, Robot” anthology series explaining why there are no robots allowed on planet earth.

@ErikUden My most interesting Skype call was with John deLancie himself - in a conference call in which the European organizers of My Little Pony conventions discussed the aftermath of the LasPegasusUnicon scam and how to rebuilt trust between IP owners and fans.

@ErikUden Between 2004 and 2008 we (based in Germany) had several Skype meetings with a friend in Sweden. We used this meetings for pen and paper role play gaming for more than 5 hours per meeting. The Laptop with the friend "sits" on a pillow on the sofa. It was as if he was really there. But than he left in the picture and he was still talking. It turned out that he had briefly left the room 30 minutes earlier and the video was 30 minutes behind the audio. It was like talking to a ghost.

@ErikUden Well, my former wife had an affair with a colleague, and they were using Skype. They weren’t aware that my wife’s account was also open on the tablet at home that our children used (with the grandparents etc.), and I was the house husband. I didn’t actively read their chats, but the messages popped up on the lock screen. 🤷Privacy guy that I am, I never told her I knew from the start. She never cared about digital privacy, was deeply offended that I never told her my passwords.

@ErikUden Now I have this image of many robots, locked alone in a room, all just standing there saying "Input error!" to each other until they run out of power. Poor things. I should report this to the SPCR (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Robots). 🤖 😢
