@GluedToTheScreen McDonalds has been working to make their restaurants appeal to customers that were moving to Starbucks. More modern stores and better coffee options are part of the pivot.

@Meachamus_Prime @GluedToTheScreen I grew up before the "playlands", but when they appeared, they looked like a big sanitation problem to me. It looks like Chick-fil-A has taken over that niche. What was cool in the late 70s and early 80s were McDonalds restaurants that had themes. One in Indianapolis at Washington Square Mall was a set of different eras in American history. One in Nashville had country music legends photos.

@GluedToTheScreen 1. Death of Playfulness & Rise of Standardization: A move to a uniform, corporate look, shifting focus from families to efficiency.2. Corporate Minimalism as Branding Strategy3. Loss of Local & Rise of The "Nowhere Aesthetic": Unique, location-specific designs replaced by identical, globally uniform buildings, erasing local character.4.Aesthetic Gentrification & Late-Stage Neoliberalism: Replacing communal, personality-driven spaces with bland, hyper-functional ones.

@elston_ @GluedToTheScreen 5. Rise of manufacturing. Mass manufacturing techniques result in uniformity. The use of bespoke designs requires more artisans and time and thus a higher base cost. When maintenance is taken into account, this cost increases.

@miyagiyoda @elston_ maintenance...... IDK but have been told thatmany Gothic buildings were of rather simple construction underneath, with fancy facings and facades. Many building exterior affectations at the time WERE manufactured in quantity (though not "mass" in today's terms).3D printing could conceivably allow a return to more interesting architecture.
