It really should be illegal to count tips as part of the wageStop underpaying workers and don't let them rely on tips, that's freaking absurd

@stux This is pretty much every single restaurant in every single state in the US. (I disagree with the practice, btw.)

@stux thinking about how the federal min wage for tipped workers in the US is just over $2in my state you can apparently set the wage to whatever, as long as the tips and wage together come out to $7.25/hr, my state's min wage i also forgot about tip pools, where workers put all their tips together and then split them equally after a shifti wish corps would just pay their workers, ugh

@stux I was shocked to see that the subminimum wage is just $2,13. That's outrageous! How is this even allowed? According to the US Department of Labor you can learn all about it in the so-called Fair Labor Standards Act. Fair? The fact that the minimum wage hasn't increased since 2009 is outrageous, too.Not to tip doesn't help the people who are employed. As this one waitress explains: She has to give some of her earnings to other staff members when she doesn't get tips. #lastweektonight

@stux He did not even cover the problem, that tipping rather than a reasonable wage puts the risk of a bad day on the worker, rather than on the owner. This publication is great. https://prole.info #Prole #AbolishRestaurants

@stux I actually looked it up, thinking that this exception to minimum wage laws happened under Reagan. Nope, it was FDR and it was part of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act. Kind of disappointing, since that Act accomplished so many good things.

@stux unfortunately it is how most restaurants are run in the US. I was a server for almost 12 years and never once was paid more than $2.50. I relied on tips and it forced me to essentially beg when waiting on tables. I took so much belittlement from customers and managers alike. I'm glad to work in an industry that pays me a living wage and I get tips. I also get to tell people off if they get rude 😅
