Like a lot of other people, we joined the Fediverse in late 2022 due to the rapidly deteriorating situation on other social media, and we have never regretted that decision. Having worked on decentralized technologies for several decades we were primed to believe in the Fediverse as a better way. Now that we have actually experienced it for two-plus years, we've written a Fediverse Report Card - and it's mostly if not entirely positive: https://systemsapproach.org/2025/02/24/my-fediverse-report-card/🧵 1/n

For starters, let's hear it for open, stable protocols to enable federation. We're protocol people, so we would say that, but here is @pluralistic making the same point:https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/ulysses-pact/#tie-yourself-to-a-federated-mast"In other words, to resist enshittification, you have to impose switching costs on yourself." 2/n

In other words, make it easy for people to leave your platform, and then you have a built-in incentive not to enshittify. The Fediverse does this quite well (if not perfectly - just ask someone who migrated an account from one instance to another how smooth it was). The jury remains out on whether Bluesky is actually going to do this – and if they don't, then it's going to be hard for them to resist enshittification at some point. Enshittification isn't just the natural order of capitalism– it is enabled by imposing high switching costs on your customers–which is why the ability to move between instances is so important to federated social media. 3/n

Say what you like about the decisions made by the designers of Mastodon, they are thoughtful and trying to take user needs into account. Look at the blog post about (finally) adding quoted posts while trying to avoid the negativity of this feature on other platforms as an example: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/bringing-quote-posts-to-mastodon/4/n

There's a lot of other things that work well to keep users in control of their content. Lists are one of our favorite features: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/5/n

For a look at the negatives of Mastodon, here's a particularly painful example of mansplaining:https://dair-community.social/@timnitGebru/1139651881923261296/n

There are some other negatives of course–and for some they have been a reason to leave Mastodon– but on balance we are finding this experiment in decentralization is working well and hope that we can continue to welcome more people to join us here on the Fediverse.
