The #meshtastic map and website that @chrx and I are building is slowly taking form, and more nodes is appearing on our map (https://karta.meshat.se).We also have a matrix-room:https://matrix.to/#/#general-swe:meshnet.club

@selea Meshtastic sounds interesting. I kinda want to setup a node now. But I don't know what I would use it for

@galaxydinodragon It is an off-grid, open-source mesh network, that uses (cheaper) LoRa devices to create that said mesh.https://meshtastic.org/Depending on where you live, there might already be a mesh in place :)This is probably the most used map:https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net/

@selea nearest points on that map are like 50 miles away :(What do I need to make a radio? Is it just like an rpi 2w with a Lora hat and install meshtastic on? Might see if I can make one for when I go about the place

@galaxydinodragon Not all nodes are visible thou, and there is nothing to tell if there is any without a meshtastic nodeRegarding RPi - If the LoRa hat supports SPI (UART not supported :( )I suggest getting two basic Heltec v3 boards - that the cheapest way to get started.

@killua99 @galaxydinodragon Getting a cheap node (Heltec V3) is the easiest way to get started, and if you could recruit a friend or two - you have a small mesh :D

@selea is it only devices within range of your radio which can communicate with you or can a message work its away around the mesh to somewhere miles away?

@galaxydinodragon It all depends on the sorrounding geography - when I am up high on a good spot, I can easily reach several miles (the world record for LoRa is 1336km).It is basically Line of Sight. You can also connect to a MQTT-broker, in order to connect with other nodes around the world (or your friends)

@galaxydinodragon Also, since it is a mesh - your messages do "jump" via other nodes too :)

@selea What do people normally use it for? Eg for example, can you tell what is this node doing? This is the nearest one to me (but still a little bit far). https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net/?node_id=2053926092

@mhamzahkhan Not all nodes are visible on the map - my personal estimation is that just 1/4 - 1/3 of all nodes are visibleThe mesh in GB is one of the most built meshesAt the moment, can message other people on the mesh, or monitor a device of yours. You can also create "private" channels (all traffic is encrypted) so only you and your friends can talk undisturbed

@selea ahhh yesterday I was looking for a prometheus exporter 🤣That one didn't come up some how. I only saw Mesh-metrics which seems to be more useful if you have a lot of nodes 😅Need to figure out how to get some peers first. I'm getting nothing at home. Need to find a renter friendly way to get a bigger antenna or something 🤔

@selea nope. No signal at all.i don't get much phone signal here either. I'm not sure if it's because it's a cul-de-sac, thr houses blocking signal or something like that. Since I'm renting, I'm not supposed to go in the attic but I might just do it anyway 🙄Though I'm not sure how hard it would be to put up an antenna from the attic.
