The pace and trajectory of current US politics look familiar to me. I'm German and during Corona I spent a lot of time researching my family history. My grandfather is from Gelsenkirchen and turned 18 when Hitler took power in 1933. In the course of my research I found a digital archive of historic German newspapers and started reading one of the local papers. The speed, at which things developed, baffled me - quite similar to today. 1/2#uspol#fascismDiary

Trump is not Hitler, but they share a similar playbook. Trump's 2nd term started on January 20th. Hitler took power on January 30th 1933. This gives Trump a 10 day advantage, but it's close enough and we can compare the steps and speed of their descent into fascism on a daily basis. Starting today I will try to post key headlines from the 1933 Gelsenkirchen Allgemeine Zeitung and a rough summary of the articles. You will not enjoy this, but hopefully find it interesting.2/2#uspol#fascismDiary

Mon, Feb 20th 1933Newspapers shut down for publishing call to vote - Newspaper close to the conservative/catholic Zentrum party were shut down for three days after publishing a call to vote from catholic organisations. The shut down was averted after Zentrum representatives negotiated with Göring and made it clear that the texts were not meant to be insulting and contemptuous towards the government. https://zeitpunkt.nrw/ulbms/date/day/7107980?d=1933-02-20#fascismDiary
