Made a quick blog post on my Mitra experience. I like it, it's amazing to self host, but it's missing a few critical features IMO.https://pleromanonx86.wordpress.com/2025/02/18/mitra-an-ideal-fedi-software-for-single-user-instances/

@sendpaws Well-written article! Though regarding what you mentioned about search, have you tried prefixing your query with >? With that Mitra searches post contents for keywords as otherwise it defaults to searching for users.

@sendpaws Search by greentext is a brilliant design decision, no?

@sendpawsThank you for writing this!Moderation tools are slowly being added, with instance-level filters coming first. If you need a particular feature, please let me know, maybe I'll be able to add it quickly. Other comments:- It can run on FreeBSD (there is at least one instance)- As @tadano mentioned, full text search can be enabled by prefixing your search query with >.- Could you tell me more about the "ability to hide timelines for logged-in users"? How it should work?

@silverpill @tadano sorry, for non-logged in users. I was tired writing that hahahaI just learned how search works finally.Basically many Pleroma instances hide the instance/timelines to non-logged in users, or posts of users on other instances, etc.

@sendpaws @tadano Mitra can hide instance timeline (actually it should be hidden from guests by default unless I messed it up somehow).Hiding users and posts is a good idea, I'll add that to my list

@sendpaws @silverpill Basically this prevents someone from going to your instance homepage, looking up nonce content on the federated timeline from that instance, taking screenshots/archives/etc. and then getting your hosting cut and possibly getting you v& because of content your site never hosted.

@silverpill @sendpaws @tadano >Hiding users and posts is a good idea, I'll add that to my listPlease make remote and local posts a separate config option as blocking access to local posts effectively breaks federation in one way. Other instances can't then fetch the remote object unless it was pushed directly to them.

@silverpill @sendpaws @tadano probably the most important would be able to subscribe to blocklists (via admin frontend) to avoid spamalso cache of federated media (still via frontend) to avoid quickly running out of storage

@ex_06 @sendpaws @tadano I think that blocking of entire instances should be a deliberate action, not automatic, because shared blocklists can be abused. Mitra already prevents federated timeline spam by default, has mention controls, and I want to implement reply controls too. That should be enough to solve the spam problem.

@ex_06 @sendpaws @tadano>How?It rejects posts that are not addressed to any local user. If you see a post in mitra, it is because you are following someone and they sent it to you, or because you're mentioned or replied to.>even just a list shared between cherry picked friend servers could be useful and not that exploitable like the very big onesYou can do this already by writing a cron job that downloads the list, parses it and feeds to mitractl add-filter-rule.Other projects are rolling out automatic subscriptions (GtS for example), if that goes well maybe I'll add this feature too.
