Hey if you're in the US you really really really need to be using a VPN so no one can monitor your traffic. Nowadays I use NordVPN. It works on both my desktop and phone! If you want to sign up you can use my referral link below. Or not. Whatever. Just use a VPN please.https://refer-nordvpn.com/piVszdDUcXt

@krusynth Simplistically suggesting "vpn" may not be a good idea. Follow the advice of trustworthy folks like EFF. Many vpn providers are suspect. https://soatok.blog/2025/02/18/reviewing-the-cryptography-used-by-signal/

@krusynth Thank you for recommending this! Do you know of any good, accessible write-ups of the threat model behind this recommendation? I think folks are struggling all the time to figure out what online protections they need, in what order, and that might help?

Hi @elizayer,Here's a good write-up about #ThreatModeling by @privacyguides: https://www.privacyguides.org/en/basics/threat-modeling/Also, these are the VPN they recommend - and why:**VPN Services**https://www.privacyguides.org/en/vpn/[Spoiler: NordVPN is **not** on the list, for good reasons]Hope this helps. @krusynth

@9x0rg @elizayer @privacyguides Thanks for this. However, they recommend Proton, who actively support the current US president, so I'm not inclined to take their advice.

@krusynthAre you suggesting EFF gives out bad advice? You've just flagged yourself as not trustworthy. Proton technically has done testablt well: I'm quite aware of the recent revelations and certainly EFF is too; and advice changes over time. Calling EFF untrustworthy says more about you than them. Who are you anyway? @9x0rg @elizayer @privacyguides

@elizayerAlso, this old-ish paper (2021) is perhaps worth reading:**How Private Is My VPN?**> VPNs promise privacy, but The Markup found their apps and websites full of trackers By Alfred Ng https://themarkup.org/the-breakdown/2021/08/12/how-private-is-my-vpn@privacyguides @krusynth

This seems like an over reaction: eff is not inherently infallible, and furthermore most things involving privacy/security are trade-offs without a single definitive 'best' answer; eff often calibrates their advice to 'normie' optimization.People with different technical acumen, threat models, or values can disagree with specific eff recommendations both in good faith and with good reason without 'flagging themselves as untrustworthy' imho.

@nicholas @9x0rgOf course EFF is fallible, and they have a libertarian bent that is not mine. And also, things change, and frequently. But promoting particular brands of VPN over tested tools is just silly, and THAT was why I flagged his post. I'm an eff supporter, but I'm no fanboy (of them or really any org). I don't give a shit what anyone thinks of them. But blanket statements are wrongheaded. @privacyguides @krusynth @elizayer

@nicholas @tomjennings also just to be fair, they were talking about privacyguides.org being untrustworthy, and we are not the EFF 🙂
