When you take your car to the mechanic, should they notify you if something happens that will increase the cost of repairs from what was initially quoted? Evidently, that's not how they do business in South Florida.

@autumnfrigger maybe their incentive is to have more cars abandoned by their owners for being too expensive to claim, so that they have more to auction/sell?

@raintrees @autumnfrigger If I got into that situation, I'd either sell them the vehicle at my (fair / bluebook) price or I'd have it towed to a junkyard and sold for scrap out of spite. I'd have them rip out whatever they put in and refund me in full (and if they didn't reverse the charges, I'd be doing a credit card chargeback since that's probably the only way I'd pay a mechanic unless I reeeaaaallly trusted them). They would not be getting another penny out of me.

@autumnfriggerI've always done all my own work. When I was in college, during finals week, my clutch kersploded. I took it to a mechanic because studies didn't give me time to work on it. He did good work, but when it came time to pay, I saw that he cleaned my air filter and charged me $60 for it.I stared at him for a solid 30 seconds, until he looked uncomfortable. I told him I asked for a clutch job, and I'd pay for a clutch job.He sighed and scratched the air filter line off the bill.
