Remember that the NAACP is calling for a massive boycott of Walmart, McDonald's and Meta because of their about face on DEI under pressure from the vague notions of the US president and his friends. I would appreciate it you participated in this boycott too. It seems like it's pretty big. (The NAACP has likely spoken with people at these organizations and found no common ground. They kind of hate calling for corporate boycotts so I can only imagine they go nowhere and were disgusted.)

It's been a really long time since they've called for this kind of boycott, and while I could make their list much longer, or expand the reasons, I'm happy to see a huge stable organization not sitting on their hands and not avoiding big targets. So, I think the right move it so support it.

@futurebird I wonder if there has been any coordination with the organizers of the ongoing boycott (hitting Amazon, Target, Walmart), but then at first glance this may not conflict with it. (I’m referring to the plan that Billy Porter, Leslie Jones,… shared earlier in Feb.)

@futurebird Support local grocery chains because they are more responsible to your community. Walmart is not the bargain it used to be anymore anyways, so you will not miss the prices either. Walmart prioritizes a show of obedience to a tyrant over it's relationship to the diverse communities it serves. That leaves an opportunity for others.

@futurebird it sounds like they are explicitly avoiding the term “boycott” in this instance. They’ve created a page called “The Black Consumer Advisory” urging people to spend their money elsewhere. Might just be a semantic difference, the three companies you’ve listed are there: https://naacp.org/campaigns/black-consumer-advisoryLike others have mentioned I rarely use any of those companies services, but I’ll be sharing it with my friends who do. Thank you for sharing it here

@futurebird My branch of the NAACP expressly stated they are not boycotting. I suspect that this more about being sued by the companies than making a statement. Let's face the facts. Walmart and Boeing have a lot more money to offer lawyers than the NAACP. That is the threat the NAACP is confronting. That does not mean that we, you, me or anyone can't make a list of anti DEI companies and act on our own initiative. Personally, I never liked going to McDonald's. Even when it was convenient.

@futurebird Remember, the cons pushed copy pasta legislation through many state legislatures forbidding “boycotting” Israel, claiming it’s anti-Semitic with false equivalence that Israel = Jewish people. (This false equivalence also serves to erase everyone non-Jewish in Israel, insidious)Choosing purchase from local businesses rather than Walmart, etc. isn’t a boycott, nor is encouragement to buy products elsewhere.Boycotts can be made illegal, but we still have some choices.

@futurebird I haven't eaten at McDonald's in more than a decade. I stopped using Meta because of their DEI and moderation changes. Boycotting Walmart completely isn't really an option because they have a monopoly in this town on certain things our family needs, and they're the only pharmacy that has the supply chain to reliably provide my "you could (theoretically) die if you miss a dose of this" drug. (All of my other prescriptions are filled at a local independent pharmacy.)

@futurebirdAgreed. But NAACP is explicitly not using the word "boycott." And I suppose they are not including Target because that company supports several Black businesses. It's easy to boycott MacDonald's. Meta a bit harder until you can get your tribe to move. And Walmart? I used to not shop there, but I'm already boycotting Amazon, so that leaves me with the problematic Target. We've nearly waited too late to boycott the few retail stores we have left. So for me it's a work in progress.

@futurebird Being a gay man, these companies that shed their DEI showed their true face. I didn’t like many of these companies to begin with, always felt that “pandering” vibe off them. Inauthentic, especially with the marketing department at Pride for each of them. Now that the truth is out there, skipping them is simple. Calling it a boycott isn’t really accurate. I went from meh to yuck. It’s to say, even if they went back, I would not. They might as well be burned out hulls.

@futurebird sure, I'll start boycotting in, um, a couple decades ago :)For the same reasons NAACP is asking for the boycott as well

because searching for "boycott" didn't find it when I searched, here's a link to the NAACP's Black Consumer Advisory: https://naacp.org/campaigns/black-consumer-advisory

@futurebird I already boycott Walmart and McDonald’s for their labor practices and general evil corporation shit. I have deleted all Meta products since they helped elect the orange bitch back to office. On board.

@futurebird Easily, readily. I *do* go to McDonald's about once every six months, but I can forego that. Walmart? Never go, nor Sam's Club. No facebook, no meta, no instagram. As you say, generally, the NAACP is quite conservative about these things. The merit, then, is that when they *do* speak to it, we get a trusted source.
