I really hate the concept of renting textbooks. Renting digital textbooks even more. When you take a course you are supposed to have what you learn forever. Naturally you won't remember it all, it won't always stay active in your mind, but you should be able to return to your notes and the textbook and "rehydrate" the knowledge. Discover that you can now connect it to all of the things you have learned since. When the textbooks are rented? I feel like something deeper must be broken.

@futurebird I took an online course through the institution I work for, and had to pay $90 for an interactive textbook that *only* works through the LMS. So you do all your work, and then have to abandon it at the end of the semester. There was a print option, but the docs it produced were terrible. And we only had access to lessons the instructor had enabled. I’m an LMS admin & manage the LMS support team; the experience must be even worse for others.

@futurebird Someone once told me that knowledge was not knowing something, but where to look for the answer.

@dedicto @StrangeNoises You know about the pi=3 incident? ... never underestimate the American capacity for being ridiculous.

@futurebird @dedicto you just need to find a way to use calculus to generate pronouns, or tell them it was really invented by a black woman and they'll be round to burn your copy stat.

@futurebird A lot of students used to buy textbooks then sell them when the course was done. Text books were expensive and I remember having to decide which books I needed and those I could do without. Renting sounds like a less expensive alternative and most books never get looked at beyond the ending of the course. Digital textbooks should've lowered costs, since no printing and distribution costs, but those folk want their $$$.

@futurebird there is a corresponding assumption in the culture that drives me to despair. It is the idea that a degree is earned from performing a sequence of mental gymnastics, of checking off boxes in lists of accomplishments == a degree. The idea that some knowledge requires scaffolding and depth of history is somehow lost in primary and secondary education. Thus, the idea one no longer needs that knowledge when they leave the class. I'm an educational radical, we need to change everything.
