@eriner @Nicktherat yesterday night is the second time in several days there were no eggs at my Publix down the road. The only reason I still have a few eggs left is because I paid 12 bucks for a dozen pasture raised organic eggs…. Call me stupid or a tremendous “bundle of sticks” (gummynerd)but I bought them instead of going without eggs.

Of the 424.7 million estimated laying hens raised by American producers, only 10.9 million, of those are pasture raised. That's 2.5%.

Parsing what was published by the USDA, it sounds like ~5% of the laying birds have been culled since December of 2024.Conclusion: this price rise is fake and gay unless someone is able to articulate how this (or something else) translates to a 50%+ increase in retail prices.Until then, I declare this to be greedy little piggy price gouging.

As a final point, for this kind of price rise to be commensurate with the number of culled birds, I'd need to see evidence of 200 million laying hens being culled.I did a search on Twitter out of curiosity, and retards are clamoring that "Oh Em Gee it's BIRD FLU you IDIOTS, they had to kill twenty MILLION chickens last quarter!"Morons, that's not even 5%.

Actually, I've proved once again that I'm the retard.CORRECTION: There are NOT 424.7 million laying hens, there are 303.4 million laying hens. This means a loss of 20 million birds in the last quarter was a 6.6% loss, not a 5% loss.

@eriner IDK 5% over that short of a period seems like lot to me. It'll take some time to replace those hens and that's if the culling stops right now. I don't think the just in time supply chain is built to withstand sudden contractions like this.

@eriner Some of the increase in price is likely the price of uncertainty. Some poultry farmers might be expecting a mandatory future culling of their birds, so they've included that uncertainty in the new prices. Maybe.

@eriner @Nicktherat Chickens are easy keepers. You can get females that look cool as pets and they'll just give you eggs. Not expensive for a hand full and if they're laying regularly. You'll have eggs coming out of your ears. Not more expensive than having a big dog, but more useful and edible too 🤣

@eriner @HiroProtagonist I agree it is likely some stores are using a potential panic as an excuse to make disproportionate egg price increases. But in terms of expected price increase, a 5% or 7% drop in the egg supply simply would mean prices increase until enough buyers say "screw eggs", and there is a supply and demand balance. You need to know the demand curve to tell expected price increases. But I think lots of Americans are really inflexible, will keep buying the same every week.

@eriner His perception was shaped by the very messaging suspended. Those sorts of inflated, panic inducing narratives that became the norm during SARS-CoV 2 are the reason the messaging is suspended, pending review. His biggest problem is really just a lack of critical thinking skills and self awareness.

@eriner @zephyrotv 8.79ish for 24 “cage free” brown eggs at Costco…..when they have them.Good color yolks and big eggs. For some reason I just paid a 2.50 egg surcharge at breakfast. I guess the restaurant suppliers are charging more now.My wife’s cousin is getting 2 dozen a day out of her birds and we benefit from that when they meet up to go gambling…….so those free eggs cost even more I suppose……

@HLC Depends on two main factors: how many chickens you have and how you feed them. Our flock of six will go through a bag of feed in about a month, maybe longer, but we give them all our kitchen scraps as their primary feed. @eriner

@viking @HiroProtagonist @eriner at an elasticity of -0.14 a 5% aggregate loss in supply is equivalent to about a ~36% price increase. a 6% about a 42% -- so either the loss is actually steeper than 6% or someone, somewhere is taking an extra 8%

@jeffcliff @eriner @HiroProtagonist Paper was from 1985The age of the paper and changes in eating habits over 40 years means the error bars are likely to be enormous. So if you were that close in calculating expected price increase, that is impressive.
