bad idea: USB-C flash drive shaped like a 5.25" floppy disk.and it checks which way you plugged it in, and only shows you that half of the files. You want to see the other files? flip it over!

@old_angry_queer USB-C is, yes. USB-A/B doesn't know because it either is one way or you've broken it

@tendstofortytwo@treehouse.systhis sounds like the kind of thing I do all the time, where I try to explain one archaic technology by saying it's like a different archaic technology.

@foone how is this a bad idea? Sounds like an awesome thing for a wild compo, retro style demo with actual "flip disk" moment. 😍

@foone lol yeah I've had the pleasure of working with a few school computers where it was possible to plug USB A in upside down. not great.

@foone You also need the corresponding USB Port that is shaped like a 5.25" floppy drive.

@foone awww thanks. Now I am a bit sad (a device in between would make this decidedly less cool as a thing to hand out.... although you could make it look like a floppy drive) but it makes sense! 🙏

@foone some of them come with only one side, you have to pay extra for the second side or use a hole punch on the side of the drive case

@foone Idea: a cursed encryption system where you have to orient the usbc stick in a sequence of up up down up up up down down positioned plugins to unlock the files on it...

@foone Well the v2.0 version could be "double sided" so it can access both sets without flipping it over.Make the v1.0 version software upgradeable via an ongoing subscription!🥴👍

@foone And you need to punch a hole into it, to write to the other side for the first time.

@fooneDo you need to punch a hole at the right spot to make the 2nd side writable? Everything else would not be acceptable for me 😉

@foone To write onto it, you need to tape down a hole of the drive first. But, bonus points: With a decent formatter like »fdformat«, »Hyperformat« or »PumpUp« you can get up to 20% more out of your flash drive. And if you interleave and spiralize the sectors, random access times, will be lower than without!https://archive.3rz.de/xx-DOS/fdformat-christoph-hochstaetter/https://archive.3rz.de/Atari-ST/3rz-sammlung/disk/pumpup15.ziphttps://archive.3rz.de/Atari-ST/3rz-sammlung/disk/hyperformat_3.2.9-kap08.lzh

@foone @old_angry_queer now wait a goddamn minute! Is this why there's a weird USBC battery pack at work that seems to charge my phone faster when it's plugged in one way round than the other?! Is that a thing?

@sun@shitposter.world @foone@digipres.club it's not really the data transfer protocol that's accounting for it, it's mostly just configuring the muxes with USB-PD. I don't think even USB4 which was built with Type-C in mind has any orientation specific stuff.

@foone That actually could be an idea for journalistsBut there should be an option to toggle the second side, making it even less "error prone" to another person putting in the side the journalist dont want them to seeMaybe likeIF flipped to side 1: normal dataside 2: hides a "exe" file (with a system how to find it instead of a defined location)When the "exe" is activated the usb needs to be repluggt fast to unlock the secret storagethats additionally encrypted
