this thunderbolt dock is great. every time I plug it in, it tells me I need to go download Dell Command | Update (WHO PUTS A PIPE IN THEIR PROGRAM NAME? SERIOUSLY?) so that my dock will work. I have Dell Command | Update, and it tells me my everything is up to date. and my dock continues to not work

@foone At least they didn't force the pipe into the executable name somehow

@foone trash shitheap utility. It litterally probably didnt update anything. Just get the thunderbolt and dock firmware from dell.com/support and install it manual.

@foone Yea, typical experience these days. Followed by Windows automatically downloading a broken driver. And after you manually install the working one it just overwrites it silently in the background again...

it's stuck in that fun middleground where it can tell that I attached a thunderbolt dock I need to update, but none of the updaters can see it.

@foone Dell laptop or something else? Dell really screwed up some of their docks, because you can only update the firmware on specific Dell laptops – if you have a different brand laptop, or even an unsupported Dell laptop, there's no way to install firmware updates.

@foone @jernej__s at work I got a Dell laptop that regularly crashes to a full "turned off" state if I dare connect it to an equally old Monitor of theirs. Both laptop and monitor firmware are fully up to date and it happens to multiple laptops on multiple displays. This is an all-Dell environment, that should be the easy case!

@foone Check if you have the latest BIOS update – those sometimes also update thunderbolt controller firmware, which may help.

@foone Did you try escaping the pipe? Or quoting it, idk.

@foone I use the WD22TB4 dock at work. Ubuntu was able to update the firmware via fwupd. Maybe you can boot a live CD to update the firmware and get it working?
