This is part of why having and using communication systems, like Signal, Bluesky and the already decentralized Mastodon, that are not directly controlled by the cyber putschists (twitter completely, facebook, instagram, threads, and tiktok likely as well) is essential. @wjmaggos I have heard good things about @matrix, but sadly don’t know many people using it yet. The decentralization is exactly the sort of resilience (I’m assuming, I haven’t looked closely at the protocol yet) that might be more resistant to billionaire take over in general and the influence or manipulation of the cyber coup plotters specifically.

@debacle @Takiro @wjmaggos that seems like a useful comparison. Sort of like Mastodon and Ghost, is there a host that offers managed Matrix hosting? I have a friend who has a fb group that wants to migrate people off of meta’s systems. But they’re not a trained admin nor an cybersecurity professional. Wondering if a managed Matrix server could offer them privacy and security with discord-like abilities.

@davidaugust @debacle @Takiro I'd disagree. Matrix does basic messaging well too.The newish #ElementX app is great. Jabber/XMPP doesn't have a great experience.

@wjmaggos @davidaugust Please do not describe Matrix as "decentralized Signal". They are completely different tools with completely different security and threat models, and Matrix does not provide remotely the same guarantees that Signal does.In the Brave New World in which we now live, using Matrix in a use case where you actually need Signal could well lead to very serious consequences.

@kittylyst @davidaugust this is widely debated.here is just one of many discussions:https://lemmy.world/post/2077535my reading of it is they are both much better than big corporate services. going forward, I value decentralization. however slightly better is the tech or trustworthy are the people currently running the org etc, I want a future with everybody able to communicate on one protocol and don't want anybody to dominate it. XMPP is a competitor but their usability is limited. thus #matrix
