Imagine you spent years getting qualifications in AI, taking AI ethics courses, and working with professionals on and with some of the first image and language generators completely inside a professional and scientific environment, only to have a handful billionaires shape the whole world's perception of what artificial intelligence is associated with within two years, whilst co-opting terms like “AI safety” or “AI dangers” entirely for marketing. Now you're left stranded with degrees and expertise in something the whole world is sick and tired of, and in a few years of time will only be associated with a bubble that once bursted. Only you and others in the field still understand how fascinating the science truly is, but even you can no longer distinguish it from the dystopian ethical issues, including plagiarism and environmental concerns.Would be horrible if that happened to anyone

@ErikUden There it is, Erik, well said. And the more so for those of us who said NO THANKS to that training because there are SO MANY PROBLEMS to solve with just our plain old I.MBAs chasing bubbles.

@ErikUden the richest people on the planet have declared they're at the highest rung. Now, they're removing the ladders.

The reason I spent over a year not just in the United States, but the Silicon Valley specifically, was due to a presentation I gave in front of the group that sponsored my trip, about AI. That was only possible through the knowledge I've learned from an internship at the German research center for artificial intelligence (@DFKI ) when I was 15. My presentation included showing the learning process of a face generating AI I've made in TensorFlow, I've also taken an image of the group and sent it home to my computer running and having the image redrawn in a Van Gogh art style. Things that nowadays can easily be done with a million websites, but back in 2019 I only knew how to do due to a scientific presentation week organized by a city near me, through a conversation I had with the guy who first did that. The result sucked a bit which is why I joked that it's only that bad because I had a bad computer, leading to me getting a sponsorship for better hardware which helped me learn video production, webhosting, and hosting Mastodon servers a few years ago. These things impacted me incredibly, even to this day! But some day I woke up and everything was in shambles. I still can't exactly say when that was, but it must've been around the time where I rewatched an old video about whether a teacher could distinguish a state of the art generated essay from a human one, and she concluded that she'd probably quit teaching if she ever realized that what she had spent hours grading was written by a machine. I paused the video and realized that it had only been uploaded a short time back, way too short of a time, since school work being done by AI was the norm now.

@ErikUden You described what has happened also to the Opera world (the oldest form of extant Western theater) over the last 150 years with exploitation of travel then recording technology What a singer is doing is more athletic than auditory and it is something that is experienced by whoever gets to feel what is happening to the air when it is happening. And recordings have taken that truth away The pandemic finished it of course The Renaissance attempt to resurrect Greek theater, gone

@ErikUden even as a someone without formal education, I feel like I live in a disconnected fantasy world when modelling AI risks for stakeholders. It's like the big players have redefined the playfield by paving over every open ethical and infosec issue with their own narrative, inserting themselves as the only natural trusted authorities.Even though I don't grasp the underlying math, I am very fascinated by how it can do these things. And scared shitless by the consequences that'll flank us
