Amazon and Walmart can still get their shipments of pallets from Chinese factories but due to this embargo I cannot. An obvious attempt to drive people off of temu and aliexpress: back to amazon. It’s not blocking Chinese made goods. It will NOT “help” US factories. It will help US mass retailers get their cut of everyone’s paychecks. I may need to just eat $300+ in logic gates and LEDs that will never arrive. I am now more determined than ever to never give a penny to mister bezos

I don’t agree with protectionist trade policies. I don’t think they work in many cases. However that’s not what this is! It’s not blocking shipments to stock the big box stores and amazon warehouses. We end up buying the same plastic objects from the same factory we just have to pay more. It’s one more racket and way to take away options and independence from regular people. How will I get the supplies I need to teach my students to soldier and about electronics!!

@futurebirdI was just reading about all of this. It feels like stopping USPS from handling the packages from China & Hong Kong was just as much about forcing the switch to corporate shipping companies as it was about taxes and pushing people to buy their crap from big distributors.(Weirdly enough, TEMU is better positioned. They have warehouses in the states where a majority of their goods go to first.) I fear it's another way to try & kill off the USPS as well.

@futurebird I quite Amazon back in November and, while most of replacing where I buy stuff has been more difficult than impossible, I was surprised that certain products are extremely challenging to find. For example, I was gifted a small hydroponics system a year ago & finding replacements for things like nutrients & growth medium has been maddening. Even going through ebay--those sellers ship stuff to me through Amazon. 🤬 Currently waiting for growth cones to arrive from China.

@futurebird Tariffs are import taxes, which are another form of sales tax. It's a way to further shift the tax burden from the wealthy onto the rest of us since the wealthy spend far less on consumer products as a proportion of their income.

@futurebird Classic conservatism. The arguments are "competition" and "free trade" when they stand to benefit, but it was never about that. It was just about who benefits.

@futurebird Amazon is a more expensive AliExpress anyway. It's flooded with chinese sellers to a point it's impossible to buy brand names because Amazons product browser is just horrible. I've not bought anything on Amazon for years. I rather just buy in local stores and for cheap gadgets I still use AliExpress. We also have Chinese shops in my country, sort of retail AliExpress if you will. Not as cheap but always ready with no weeks long waiting.

@Apiary Only the most massive of brains. Why do I have to find out about six terrible ideas every day and then only one happens and no one even knows which one it was? This is exhausting. Did we invade Greenland yet? My face hurts.

@futurebird ok I absolutely understand your point and your frustration, but when I read the last rhetorical question I immediately think “Adafruit, Jameco, Mouser, Digikey.” The tariffs are absolutely limiting your options here, but there are non-billionaire-fascist-oligarch options galore *especially* in the small electronics space.
