I really love Black american culture. But, also more and more I keep wondering why is it OUR job to explain who America is to itself? The work of Black artists does this consistently with precision and clarity. A mirror, a commentary on wherever the country happens to be. Distance and separation give perspective. I guess it's not that complex. But, also being America's conscious and therapist is thankless. This country eats our children. I do not have the patience to have a heart to heart.

There is one function this kind of art serves that I respect. It makes Black people and those close to us feel a bit better and less alone. You feel less crazy when someone correctly describes what is happening. That matters. I won't discount that.

Black people have made blues, gospel music, jazz, hip-hop all of these forms of art that could help this country sit down and get right in its soul, to reflect on suffering, and its causes and grow and none of it is working. That's all I'm saying.

Football half-time shows are not where you'd expect to find subtile insightful artistic statements. But, generally speaking for these mass events Black artists like Kendrick and Beyonce deliver work that exceeds the venue. It's entertainment, it "slaps" -- but it also speaks. And I guess that's a good thing, but I also don't think these celebrations deserve such high quality work. Work with depth. Pearls for swine. OK there I said. it.

@futurebird IDK. Reaches a very big audience -- and often an audience that needs to hear it.Which often triggers weird backlash. So many people are living in cultural bubbles now -- there's less of the "public square" than there once was, for better and worse.

But maybe it can't "slap" if it isn't real? That seems very possible and the kind of thing highly accomplished artists would understand on an intuitive level. They know they need to deliver something good and memorable ... so it has to be true.Maybe that's why this keeps happening. But there is a dissonance to it, isn't there?

@futurebird I'm not fan of commercial pop culture, but aren't these events massively watched ?So even if most people don't care, a small percentage of them caring still means a lot of people appreciating...

@TerryHancock This one and the one Beyonce did were really remarkable. I was still taken in and impressed with the imagery and sheer talent. This all reminds me of that artist who painted Charles II drenched in blood and I kind of love it. But, if you want "good art" it needs to be true so there is this little space where power allows the truth to be exposed. I don't know if I'm making any sense.

@futurebird This is one of the reasons I've been doing a daily Black History Month post that mostly focuses on the period of Black history that I lived through as a teen and a very young adult - the songs, the speeches, the martyrs, and the heroes.LBJ kicked the southern racists out of the Democratic Party and Nixon proceeded to welcome them to the GOP with open arms. It saddens me to see how said racists / sexists / homophobes / transphobes came to dominate the GOP.

@futurebird there wouldn't be "American" if it wasn't for black artist. Country music itself is an offshoot of the blues.

@futurebird Nearly any Black film from the 70s explores more about culture and history and provides more context for what people might aspire to be among the manufactured chaos of society, than any of the gritty life story and human explorations lauded by the Academy at the time. The lessons have stayed consistent but become louder and more urgent. And no one is still listening. Funkadelic said it straight, America eats its young. White America just ordered a side of 'freedom fries' instead.

@futurebird You’re definitely right, and in the Charles case as well as Kendrick there’s the deniability that Charles is in imperial red and Kendrick was performing at drake. The truth comes out because power cannot see itself in any other way than justified and good. But there’s always a tradition in which this is known to not be the case, and so the Charles painting and Kendrick’s performance resonate in a different way to a different audience that power cannot conceive exists legitimately
