I've noticed that some of the people I'm in contact with via. email have removed the pronouns from their signatures. More than I would have liked to think. No one has TOLD them to do this. There are some cases where people are being told. But, this isn't that. It's fear at best and something much more ugly at worst. This is exactly the kind of craven compliance that will lead to all the worst places. No one told you to do that WHY are you so eager to help?

For the love of god at least force someone to ASK you to do these things. Make them say it. Wow. I will say something about this.

If I noticed I know our trans students will too. Ugly ugly stuff. And really? No one is gonna ask me to change it. This is a choice.

@futurebird I'm all for the pronouns and try to respect them as good as I can. Also because my son is transgender :)But I never put the pronouns in my email, I always thought: "I'm too old for this, I'm a cranky white dude".However, my rebel in me thinks it might be a good time to put them in my email anyway! If it's only to show support for those who already do.

@futurebird My employer had begun offering business cards with pronouns. I filled out the form and got back cards without pronouns, last year.

@ineiti Yeah, I found it kind of performative and the 7 people I've noticed who have removed them are the same 7 who made me roll my eyes when they put them in about 3 years back. But since I was new at that time I set mine up "like everyone else"And now I've seen this little change from a few people and I'm so disgusted with all of them. So disappointed.

@ineiti Think of it this way. If someone thinks they want to tell everyone at an organization that "pronouns in your signatures must go, we don't consider it professional or in keeping with the times" or whatever that is a much less easy thing to say if half of the people at the organization have such signatures. If it's just a few trans people and their weird friends well, then it's easy. If it's a lot of people it's much more of an issue. Why make it easy?

@futurebird We are free to use / specify pronouns on here, and there is nothing goverments or big tech can do about that, big tech can remove that feature, but we need to ensure that all platforms on here have that feature and we can use it if we choose to do so.

@futurebird @ineiti this is a prisoner dilemna all over again : we should all declare pronouns , for the possible safety of all BUT if I play in the shadows, if no one knows... I am assured to be safe.

@futurebird @ineiti I'm cis and I've had pronouns in my email signature and soc med for years. It is a useful numpty detection method.

@futurebird @ineiti Also plausible deniability for anyone who might get harassed over being trans.IMO there's also value in having a few users who _don't_ have pronouns in their bio, so that closeted or questioning people can keep quiet without having to actively misgender themselves, but the people doing it should be a majority or a very significant subset at least.

@futurebird @ineiti 1/2When my company's #DEI Director explained the concept & **mentioned** **why** they were sharing their personal pronouns I have had mine out there in my public profile, right now, not here. My pronouns would not put me at risk so it's not brave. I do it more in #allyship than anything else. I also use strong #e2eencryption whenever possible even for nonsensitive information. It's part allyship, part aircover, part practice of being the person I choose to be.

@futurebird I agree with you, the precomplicance is maddening. OTOH I have always faught gender BS with intentional confusion, and when castigating jerks for using diminutives to address me, I'd be like "I have a name, use it!" Since grade school I refused to mark the box for sex on standardized tests. The only place that matters is when getting accurate medical care. Everywhere else? "gendered pronouns" are just stupid white male supremacy labelling to set social retrictions and expectations. One could say I'm a fan of the singular They for eveything. Need to clarify? use their name.

@futurebird and even if it's their fear... so they, as cis people, are afraid that they'll face some consequences just for having pronouns in signatures? This very clearly illustrates, how terrible things are for visibly trans people!

@ersmith @futurebird @ineiti Taylor Swift(s) has entered the chat. But seriously I have this issue with a non-insignificant amount of anglo names too.So, yes! Pronouns in bio/signature! It helps _everyone_ to not misgender anyone :)

@futurebird @ineiti Exactly. Make them say it. Make sure it's on the record that they said it. Save the email. Print it out and file it away somewhere. Just in case.

@Mabande @ersmith @futurebird @ineiti Yes! I have made this point numerous times. So many gender neutral English names, and names that are homographs and so different in different languages (Jean) or would be assumed differently for different territories/ages (Hilary, Lesley/Leslie, Rhys/Reese/Reece, Morgan, Kim). And that's just European names. I sometimes work with South Asian contractors over email and often have no idea and have to work out how to *avoid* pronouns in case of offence.

@futurebird when this came up, I realized I didn’t have my pronouns on my email sig (have them practically everywhere else). I fixed that and even made it 2 points bigger than my name. I will not comply with any request to remove them.

@futurebird The acting NASA Administrator has instructed all NASA employees to remove pronouns from their email signatures and they removed the pronouns from the NASA Teams profiles. I work for a contractor, and we do not yet have to follow this.
