Diversity is an interesting concept. We don't call a collection of people with different types of fingernails "diverse." To value diversity is to value bridging social divisions that are often be tools of domination, power. A commitment to diversity doesn't just lead to better outcomes, more creative solutions and more resilience in the face of challenges.Diversity also fades, as the divisions become less effective tools of exploitation. I can see why it's threatening to some.

It's interesting that the word used in these attempts at progressive policy was NOT "equality" -- equity isn't the same thing as equality. Equity about impartiality. Equality can seem like an unrealistic goal. Equity is a bare minimum to strive to act without prejudice. Without *pre* justice, not without judgement. Equity will not correct the harms of the past, but it asks merely that no new harms are done.

To benefit from diversity you need to actually listen and learn from those marked out as "diverse" by the social expectations of your time. Though I'd think one would want to do this for more basic human reasons of treating people with respect and this whole "it's gonna make you better" carrot wouldn't be needed but here it is.

So, yes I support "DEI" it would be more correct to say that I don't think it's enough. DEI is an act of self-preservation and improvement for any organization where diversity is rare, equity violated and inclusion fails. It's YOUR bottom line. Do you want to accomplish your goals efficiently? Do you want to attract the most talented people and get them to work towards those goals with creativity and sincere commitment? Then you need to at least attempt DEI. That's why it exists at all.

It's the same reason it's a good idea to insist that people treat each other with respect when working together. The same reason you wouldn't decide to only hire people from your own family if you really wanted the best person for the job.Any organization for-profit or non-profit that is run by people who care about meeting their goals and being good at meeting those goals would get this. But sometimes organizations are more like gangs. All of this talk of excellence is a joke to them.

@futurebird Right. It merely implies that those acknowledged as part of the recognized diversity have a stake in the system.

@futurebird This is the only thing that has truly surprised me over the past few weeks: the huge number of people in positions of authority (employers, military commanders, etc.) who've turned out to be asshole bigots who were only implementing DEI because the law was forcing them to. The instant the law vanished, so did their willingness to include non-white non-male people. It shouldn't surprise me. But it does. I thought DEI was welcome because it *is* better for everyone. Even them.

@courtcan Hold on, a law was changed? I feel like I should know this but there was a DEI law? Not just a federal policy of vague support?

@futurebird @courtcan One of the pile of directives immediately slammed onto the desk by Pam Bondi was to criminally investigate any organization that "does" DEI. Even private organizations.https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2025/02/pam-bondi-trump-doj-memo-prosecute-dei-companies.html

@futurebird Edited my post. You're right. I was thinking in terms of DEIA as a direct result of all the non-discrimination laws established over the past 100-ish years. DEIA as the spirit of the law working in reality. Get rid of the spirit of the law, and the law with its cold dead letter might as well not exist.

@futurebird Shout out to every single company and organization out there hiring only the people who are most similar to their current teamTo them, having a cozy tea time session, matters more than resultsThen complaining ah yes we can't get any more suitable employeesNo shit you can't. There's a limit to similar people out there. There's more to that ice berg but then it'd be a full blown vent 😅

@futurebird Fear and zero-sum thinking pervade the MAGA agenda. “Anybody different is scary and helping others takes from me.” And god forbid white people have to entertain the idea we, individually or collectively, have ever wronged anyone. It saddens me that blaming the other is such an effective political tactic. 1/2

@futurebird What gives me hope is areas in the US with dense population are consistently blue. What that tells me is people exposed to people who are different from them usually figure out that those differences are OK and people are people. That said, the current political tenor here scares the crap out of me. I don’t see the path out yet.

@_L1vY_ @futurebird @courtcan The Queen of Hearts shouted with a hearty bellow, blowing over some of the lower-ranked cards nearest her enormous courtroom bench. "Prosecution FIRST! Legislation AFTERWARD!"
