@futurebird i dunno, if a kid understands the significance of a private individual "updating their website" i think they'd realize nothing on their phone easily allows for the tasks required for that

@futurebird @alienghic My favorite, with younger computer people, is to describe the days before Arpanet, Bitnet, Usenet, et al. merged into The Internet as such. I had a friend at a school on Bitnet, my school was on Arpanet, and you had to know a computer that was on both to relay the messages. And UUNet was just a bunch of computers periodically dialing each other up to say "Got anything for me?" so you had to know the entire connected path to send a message.

@futurebird @leadore see, this is why I could not teach children, because from this moment on, the entire curriculum would become "we're going to build the internet from first principles, starting with building an acoustic coupler modem and a dial-up BBS, so you understand."

> Goods no longer flowed from the coast to the interior, and vice versa. The price the tribe spaid forthe axes was their independence. They all became dependent on themissionaries, whose principles for distributing the axes must have appeared completely irrational and incomprehensible to the tribes.literally my thoughts about smartphones and computing (mutatis mutandis)

@futurebird Modem came up in crosswords last week. The definition was something like "you use it to connect a phone to a computer". Took us a while to get to the word the puzzle wanted.

@futurebird @alienghic I got a voicemail a few months ago that was exclusively this sound, and I felt so much affection for it but also vaguely uneasy, like it was a desperate attempt by someone/something from the past to send a warning to us here in the future.

@wakame In this case it's because that's where the server was, and not every change could be made remotely.I did teach them what a server was in the end. We have one in the back of the room where the CS club meets... but I'm in bad need of easier to use server software. Apache is too vast and complex. What I would give for a server software designed for education environments. Something dead simple with guard rails and fewer quirks and details.
