I have been scared to ask this question #onhere because it seems like the kind of thing I ought to be able to research— I need web hosting. Parameters:1. Not godaddy- not morally compromised as much as this is possible. 2. Geared for a small hobbyist. Medium technical.3. Small database, the ability to run server side code. 4. Under $60USD a month (inclusive)Everything I’ve looked at so far has been too technical or had not enough features. I wonder if dbWired is still around? #techhelp

@futurebird I've had good luck with nearlyfreespeech.net over the years but it may be a bit too DIY.

@futurebird if EU-based is an option: I’m quite happy with Hetzner, https://www.hetzner.com/. They offer a broad range from fully managed to virtual root servers and are quite reliable AFAICT.Their Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetzner

@david_megginson Yes. But I don’t want to be trapped in wordpress. I might use it for a blog or gallery but I also want to be able to just put up my own pages— with their own code and databases sometimes. Is this asking too much? I don’t even know what a “subnet mask” is but I can learn such things given time.

@futurebird I think you should add a line about which jurisdiction(s) you're looking to host in for best results.

@futurebird On the moral side: Hetzner have a great reputation on a technical basis, but also have a history of actively queermisic behaviour.I'm with Scaleway at the moment. Apart from their enthusiasm for "AI" they've been good so far. Great documentation, too.

@futurebird Have you considered a droplet at DigitalOcean? I don't know if your own web-facing Linux instance counts as medium technical, and don't think I've seen any discussion about them pro or con wrt criterion (1.), but they do provide a platform where you can run a database and/or other applications of your choice from $6/month up, depending on how much storage and memory you need.

@futurebird My website is hosted by atspace.comShared hosting, basic plan. It costs me about 165 EUR every 3 years, including the .org domain and domain privacy protection.Free https from LetsEncryptUnlimited disk space and trafficLots of server-side stuff to choose from, like wordpress, mediawiki etc. if that's what you want. My site is mostly static but I run a few server-side things in Perl, PHP and Python. I upload it using the reverse mirror feature of lftp. No SSH access.

@futurebird I recommend @reclaimhosting!! I have been using them for years, they specialize in education, the service is great, and they support some educational software (like omeka s) with installatron that no one else supports

@futurebird Dreamhost and Bluehost have worked well for me, including easy Wordpress or other CMS and DB installs specifically on Bluehost. I use Dreamhost mostly for domain registrations.

@futurebird I'm a member of @mayfirst co-op and use their web hosting stuff a lot. If you need a dedicated private server it gets expensive quick, but if you're okay just serving some pages off of the shared infrastructure it's pretty great. Comes with databases, nextcloud, email, and instant messaging using #XMPP too.

@futurebird infinityfree is a Dutch charity which you can host for free. They have add inns like database and stuff. I used them to host a few pages for a party I gave. There doesn't *seem* to be drawbacks.

@futurebird I love Dreamhost. The shared services are cheap and solid, and there's a lot of access to the backend via their solid admin control panels.

I am thinking of a similar project and wondering if all I NEED to serve is a limited, explained set of database queries, so maybe I can produce those locally and only publish a static site. commenting can be left to fedi! Much easier hosting AIUI. @futurebird

@futurebirdI used to host on a US-based vendor called https://www.a2hosting.com/ for several years, they had good support and reasonable prices. I'm very technical in that space, so it's hard for me to assess how much knowledge you need to run on their platform.
