Mastodon isn't perfect. But the fact a social network exists that is completely free to usehas no venture capital investorshas no shareholders to answer tohas no growth targetswith a web interface with zero tracking cookiesand mobile apps with zero trackers at all with ten thousand server administrators who donate their time for user safety is - in my opinion - mindbogglingly cool, given the state of the world we live in. Not everything has to be shit. People make things better.

@GossiTheDog it also points to a better possible world of sustainable media and digital services. even platform cooperatives to replace companies like Amazon. we just need to make paying people directly easier. a fiat payment open protocol perhaps.

@GossiTheDogI keep explaining to IRL people why I'm on Fedi, and that there's no "Engagement Engineering" so ofc I put it down after a while, naturally.. THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE.. Weaving my (own, personal) social network with "tools" is so much more healthy than being on a corporate attention treadmill with "products"!Volunteer to help your local admins, and/or contribute. It's worked for public radio, it can work for public internet..βοΈ

@GossiTheDog On that note, if you're able to but not financially supporting your favorite server and the people who are toiling to keep it healthy, shame! Fix that now!

"free to use" - just like all other social media platforms, too - at last from a casual user perspective. But what is the difference? Influencer don't get paid here in the Fediverse (except of maybe some very rare ones for passive product placement). As a result, the "mainstream" influencers are missing - including their follower base. If this is a pro or con probably depends on the point of view.@GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDogVery nice. My only issue is that the #Fediverse is not confined to #Mastodon although it is the most prominent implementation@selea

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Not everything has to be shit. You can help here by realizing #Mastodon is just a part of what makes the #Fediverse great. There's many more alternatives, many of them older than Mastodon, and most of them better in several ways too. Please help in making the Fediverse less shit by understanding more of it.

@GossiTheDog What is good about the fediverse isn't that it's merely gratis to use - what's good is the freedom, with many instances licensed under the AGPLv3-or-later, from GNU Social, to Pleroma to Mastodon.

@GossiTheDog This toot makes part of me want to invite persons on FB to join Mastodon. But, I hesitate, since they in turn might invite persons I would rather not see on Mastodon. Itβs a conundrum.

@GossiTheDog Yeah, it really feels like something different. It's a shame that it isn't growing as fast as some alternatives, but the slow but sustainable growth alongside the evolution of the technology makes it feel much more like "technology as infrastructure" than the "technology as capital" we've had for the past decade. Now if only we could diminish the number of reply guys with "actually it does have cookies or else the login wouldn't work...", we could really make it perfect.
