Good morning, Brussels! This is the first day of #FOSDEM https://fosdem.org/2025/ The introduction talk will start soon.If you are not interested in free software, better to mute the hashtag this week-end :-) (Also #FOSDEM25 or #FOSDEM2025, which are used by some persons.)

The good thing about getaddrinfo: it works and on all platforms. The bad things: not the full response details like the TTL (remember it is not just for #DNS), no way to control resolution from the application (some may say it is a good thing) And it is only for A/AAAA records. How to use SVCB?But also, Firefox (the speaker works for Mozilla) has a DoH client, DoH being easier / better than getaddrinfo for a Web browser.#FOSDEM

@bortzmeyergetaddrinfo also works differently on libc and musl in split DNS scenarios. musl is intentionally more strict and adheres to the standard, but the libc interpretation is more useful and widespread. So we cannot even assume semantic clarity when talking about this 'single' interface.

Obvious things (making some code optional, tuning the default configuration, compiling with more aggressive options, packing the executable) did not really help. One of the problems: most of the memory was used by OpenSSL, not by dnsdist itself. (but wolfSSL was not really better)Lua (used to adapt dnsdist behavior) was also a big memory user.#FOSDEM
