I've been on Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) for over two years. This digestion altering drug has a lot of hype, consternation and nonsense surrounding it. The drug acts primarily on your digestive system slowing how quickly your stomach will empty. For some people this means they are much less hungry and lose weight. It doesn't work in the same way for everyone and the side effects can vary a lot too.

I don't call it a "weight loss drug" because it's not like you could take it, loose weight and then stop taking it and stay at a lower weight. If Semaglutide will help you, it means committing to taking it for the rest of your life. I've lost about 70 pounds, and stayed at the same lower weight since I lost it for about a year and a half.

The thing I like most about the drug is I don't feel hungry all the time. I've always tended to gain weight easily, and I've always been hungry 90min after eating a big meal. Not so anymore. Nature gifted me with an efficient, dare I say superior digestive system, but I've spent most of my lift fighting it and being either stressed because I was hungry or stressed because I ate too much and would soon be hungry again.

Even without the weight loss I'd still want to take it because now my hunger feels more manageable and reasonable. The benefits for me have been increased mobility, not being hungry and eating a more healthy diet with less stress. The down sides are I look about 8 years older. As far as looking cute? I was more cute before. And I consider needing to take it every 10 days to be a downside. It's not covered by insurance. So it costs about $300 a month.

I'm very happy in the balence. I think it could help a lot of people. I think it's important to make it clear what it does and doesn't do. And it will not work for everyone. After breaking my leg I worried I wouldn't be able to do all of the things I used to do. Improving my physical mobility has been much easier at a lower weight.

And I never knew how much the stress of "watching my diet" we driving me crazy. I spent so much energy worrying about "eating things so I'd feel full" I had small plates. I stoped to breathe between each bite. I chewed slowly. I ate high fiber and a balanced mix of fats. I was still hungry, stomach growing, headache creeping in unless I ate more food than I wanted to eat. That stress is all gone. So, it's a big improvement.

@futurebird I've heard that these drugs lead to people eating more healthily. Is this true? From what you're saying, it doesn't sound like it'd suddenly make people crave broccoli - or does it?You said something about every ten days. Do you only take a dose every week and a half?

@davidnjoku They normally start it at once a week, but I have found that I can go for ten days. I asked my doctor if this was OK and she said it was fine. I've always been very health conscious about what I eat. Now I eat the same things but just less. Since I get full more easily I eat the least "empty" calories first. So, leafy greens and protein before starch and sugar because I might be full and not get to those. Which is kind of the whole point.

I do have little bit of bitterness because I suspect that what I now experience is how life normally is for most skinny people. On average fat people know more about nutrition, and think more about what they eat than people who haven't been lectured about their weight and health for their whole lives, I think. It's really hard for people to understand that different people really do experience things differently. I feel sort of vindicated in a way. I was NOT making it up.

@futurebird That makes so much sense. Thank you. Thinking of how I eat, I *do* start with the carbs. I can see how just switching that around would make a difference. Is there any sort of a stigma attached to these drugs? I know celebrities are secretive about taking them, but that might be because they've got workout DVDs they want to sell.

@davidnjoku There is a lot of stigma and weird emotions around these drugs IMO. From people trying to push them on people who don't want to lose weight to people calling it "cheating" which is wild. There are also a lot of "just so" scare stories about "ozemic face" because losing a lot of weight if your aren't in your 20s *will* make you look older. I don't really care about that. If that's the primary concern then this isn't really the right solution.

@janwwbosch If you don't mind me asking was it because you felt sick and the nausea was just that miserable? Or did it just have some other effect? This shows how very different experiences can be. I feel like I'm in balence for the first time in my life. I wish I could go back in time and take this drug from day one. But I think feeling hungry and digestion must be tied into all of the body's systems and the impact of changing that can be massive and vary a great deal.

@davidnjoku Mounjaro didn’t make me suddenly crave broccoli, but it did reduce my cravings for carbs and that has improved my diet substantially. Also, like @futurebird, I don’t feel hungry all the time so portion control is easier. But you still have to make lifestyle changes too, like ramping up the exercise and choosing smaller and better meals. The drugs just facilitate those changes.

@futurebird thanks for this thread. As I'm one of those people whose initial knee jerk reaction to these drugs drugs was that they are kinda like "cheating" (because I got stories from my doctor friends about being overwhelmed by patients wanting prescriptions before vacations and such), it is very helpful get your side of the story.

@futurebird And for some of us, they do nothing whatsoever. I did two years of Saxenda and Wegovy and neither made me lose a gram. They don't work if food is not the issue. So, contrary to what I am often 'helpfully' told, I don't just need to get on Wegovy.

@futurebird i've never been overweight, but my digestive system hates me.i have to be v careful about what i eat or i get really insane arthritic pain. i think i have that 'leaky gut' issue where stuff from your microbiome goes into your body & wreaks havoc.i've also been vegetarian for 30 years & started paying lots of attention to what i eat after age 25.as you say - ppl experience things differently.im very glad that these drugs have been helping folks tho, for real.

@futurebird indeed, in my case all it does is keep me from binge eating and levels off my blood sugar. I actually gained weight while on it.

@futurebird thanks for writing this! i had a similar experience and a similar 70 lb loss. unfortunately, i had food poisoning last spring, didn't take it for a few weeks, and got essentially kicked off bc starter does weren't available at the time. can confirm that the weight creeps back on post-semaglutide. now considering self-pay compounded stuff bc my insurance company will only cover it if i were to put on another 50. completely insane.

@futurebird Yeah, I was overweight growing up, and, like pretty much everyone who was once overweight and became lean, I put weight on very easily. I'm 45 now and have been varying degrees of lean for over 27 years, but I still have to be super vigilant and track everything or else I start to gain. People who were never overweight just don't get that struggle. Even maintenance is a challenge, let alone cutting weight.
