Should people who openly bribe the President, even if they are “respected” lawyers or CEOs or whatnot, doing it because “it’s in the best interest of shareholders” be welcome in polite society? Should you serve them in your restaurant? Speak politely with them at conferences?

@interfluidity Feels like a “don’t hate the player” situation in some ways and like 1930s Germany in others.

@interfluidity they're the people running all the payment systems, all the Web hosting, all the media, all the technology, all the energy, fuel and water provisions, all the comms, the groceries, the shipping, the steel, the transport ... it's impossible to boycott. Unless you/they too are a billionaire, I doubt you'd/we'd rub shoulders with them in public 🤷🏻‍♂️

@ItsThatDeafGuy each of us individually have very little likelihood of rubbing shoulders. but all of us collectively run the restaurants they patronize. we caddy their golf games. if many of us collectively choose to shun and express disgust towards them, they will experience that.we can’t boycott everything, no. but we can condition our purchases. i can’t never buy amazon, but i avoid it. online you and i both obviously seek alternatives.we can impose costs. we’re not powerless.

@mattlehrer how does one encourage redefining the game if you don’t alter the incentives on the players?

@interfluidity Well, yes, obviously. But I can't think of any examples where the hoi polloi "cut"¹ the venal in numbers large enough to have an effect. There was snobbery directed downward toward mercantile nouveau riche, but the main result seems to have been strategic marriages. ¹ https://uncommon-courtesy.com/2014/10/01/the-cut-direct-the-fiercest-etiquette-punishment/

@interfluidity @ItsThatDeafGuy Lately, i get a lot of movie reference pings. Right now i am getting "fight club". Please don't focus on the sexist vibe of that movie, i know and i dislike. It's the "if we stop bowing down" part i mean.

@interfluidity Wrong frame, i think. We should speak politely to all that try to coexist. Someone might be a president or not, someone might be respected or not, someone might have the interests of already rich people in mind or not, all those things do not tell me if that person is trying to coexist with others. Some do the problematic things you talk about, but are trying and failing. No reason to be impolite. Attacking others, now that is a reason for defense of others, and what we do must be impolite to be effective.
