Currently there are still people alive who fought for the freedom of the world in the Second World War against the nazi's, there are not much anymore but they certainly are still here!I think it's safe to say that #WWII was the most terrible war we've ever hadWe are now living in a time where the architects of those horrific times are getting adored, imitated and even praised, this is nothing less then truly disgusting and dangerousStand up against #fascism, do not accept or ignore it

@stux My late father landed on the beach at Arromanches in June 1944 and ended up driving a water bowser during the relief of Bergen-Belsen. He’d be horrified by this current right wing rhetoric. I am disgusted by Trump, Musk, Netanyahu et al. I’m an old man now but I’ll do all I can to battle against these bastards, including being very vocal on social media.

@stux my grandfather was one of them. Fought in Eastern Europe, Middle East, North Africa, and after D-Day from Normandy across Western Europe to German Naval base Wilhelmshaven.Lest we forget.Stop fascism!

@stux Am old enough that uncles went and fought in WW11. One died at Vimy Ridge, another came home missing half his face, Mom damaged her eyesight working in one of the factories here. An older friend was one of the Devil's Brigade. It isn't long past history. Perhaps them shouldn't have been so quiet about the horrors that maybe some of their kids and grandkids would know why the world came together to stop it.

@stux As a kid my folks met and became friendly with an Hungarian family with daughters near my age. We visited back and forth with them for nearly a decade until something brought up the conversation of the war. Gita offhandedly commented to Mom that the camps etc was all a propaganda campaign and didn't happen. That was the last time we saw them.

@stux My mom is in her eighties. She was a small child in Nazi-occupied Denmark. Hey family immigrated to Venezuela and then the United States shortly after the war ended. I find it sad and fascinating that fascism is bookending her life, an ominous background that she couldn't understand as a child, and doesn't really accept as an aging adult. But I don't think it's a coincidence. Fascism unleashed horrors in WWII. As long as those were remembered we had a firewall.Now that we have forgotten, it's all going to burn.

@stuxStories I have been told include on my father's side: both brothers of my grandmother were sent to war and died. My grandfather fled from eastern Germany and was registered as Soviet Zone Refugee.On my mothers side: my great-gandfather was a prisoner of war, shot in the knee in capture but survived.A piece of land was forcibly sold and an ancestor put all the money into WW1 bonds.I have personally seen a german nazi era birth certificate of one of my ancestors with a swastika on it.

@stux there are not enough people around anymore who lived through it to tell the tale of just how horrific and destructive it was. It's almost a century ago, it's history but it's starting to really feel like history. I hope educational institutions will begin to put more resources into just how horrific it was. I cannot emphasise enough how important counter misinformation education is in this age.

He was originally supposed to land on D-Day itself but there was a problem with the crappy, quickly built ship they were going to use to get him there; good thing because 1/3 of the troops who arrived on June 6 died that day.He'd be 102 if he were still alive, he died decades ago. But he's be out of his mind with anger at people like Elon Musk and the other neo-Nazis so prominent today.

A #holocaust survivor gave back their #bundesverdienstkreuz (the only general award of valor for the federal republic of germany) because the chancelor started collaborating with fascists. He asked the new german nazi party (legally recognized nazis at the helm and over 700 lawyers signed a letter deeming them hostile to our constitution) to help him push a law to limit immigration to germany. The former chancellor (angela merkel) even condemned his actions.
