The ant of the day is Camponotus schmitzi! These carpenter ants live in the hollow tendrils of the plant Nepenthes bicalcarata, a picture plant from Borneo. Like most "carnivorous plants" due to nitrogen poor soil this plant captures insects. But, it also provides a home for schmitzi, also known as "diving ants" these ants remove large insects from the plant keeping the pots more healthy. Their waste provides extra nitrogen for the plant. The plant provides the ants with nectar and housing.

@futurebird @loren amazing. On a different topic, I thought of you recently when I saw this hat that someone had painted ants on 🐜 It was very cool

@loren Imagine how cozy they must feel living in those curly stems. Swimming ant catching food, drinking nectar... they also like to clean the surface of the plant keeping it slippery. This plant and these ants have everything.

@futurebird so essentially schmitzi are the rhizobia of pitcher plants?

@futurebird I don't know! I guess you could say that some epiphytic bacteria make plant surfaces "cleaner" by excluding or outcompeting pathogens, but the specifics of that are pretty far outside my area!
