The problem is that people made a decision you don't agree with, but you can't accept that, so you have to remove people's agency and responsibilities for their decisions and move it to some aspect outside of democracy. In Germany today, the government takes active measures against democracy because the democratic will is increasingly right wing and nationalist -- a reaction to too little democracy for too long.

Like if you say a prayer over a candle, that's magic right? But if you do it in church, it's religion? On closer examination, the line defines in-group vs out-group more than any distinction in the actual phenomenon under discussion. Never mind that it was originally a reference to Zoroastrians, and used by a whole host of people in a pejorative sense to denounce other people's religious practices even 2,000 years ago and more. As to mysticism though, I think that's a different beast. It's more an internal acquisition of knowledge/perspective about the world and relationship with self. Can have some overlap, but not so much about exterior cause and effect as it is about inner change of consciousness.Anyway, unlike you, I find myself fascinated by this stuff, since infancy. Especially now the intersection between ancient shamanistic practices (incl witchcraft, occultism, western magickal tradition, etc) and it's modern incarnation via the use of media and technology at the hands of the corporatocracy. It's clandestine cultural influence can't be understated. Far from some mysterious secret society lurking in the shadows, the real mccoy is more truthfully lurking in everyone's hands in the form of their so-called `smart` devices.

That's even true when I use the name of a deity, because I recognise the deity represents and energetic principal which I myself will need to embody in order to bring about the desired result. It's a bit of psychological slight of hand. In that sense it very much blurs the line between religion, magic and mysticism, but I'm totally okay with that as long as it gets the job done. Not everything needs to slot into a perfectly well defined ontological or semiotic category in order to be useful.

That's really just a matter of the form people choose to visualise when they consider the idea. Whether it's inanimate, or animate, is purely an imaginary distinction, and when it comes to things like a pet rock, or a religious icon, the distinction can blur very quickly.Another element to it (which is admittedly speculation) is whether there is a non-corporeal or at least as yet unproven connection between the minds of different people (eg. collective unconscious, psychic realm, astral plane, whatever, etc). That being the case, then it's quite possible that these entities are in fact like a cross-roads of the minds/imaginations of everyone who shares the idea. And I speculate that since in the case of deities, people imagine them to be individuals, that is how the express themselves to those who encounter them in states of trance, dreams, etc. In fact they may well be a conglomerate of a all the minds of all the people who imagine that being, merely appearing as an individual, because that's in keeping with everyone's expectation. This can lead to very uncanny and inexplicable transfers of knowledge across the boundaries of time and space. I like it as a pretty interesting case study of a kind of uncanny crowdsourced snowball effect. If you're very sceptical it could be explained away with the Barnum effect, magical thinking, the clustering illusion, etc. That said I think this kind of thing is more common than people realise and has a lot to do with other quasi religious phenomena like people seeing Jesus on toast, and so forth.
